Profile Information

About me:
I am an upstate New York mom of three children, two daughters and a son.My son is my sailor -who I am extremely proud of. He is currently in Virginia training with the riverines, which will be his home base for the next three years.
I am here to support or represent my:
Child/Stepchild
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Needed to learn more about it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
That as a mom it is hard to let any of your children go,but when you are letting go to one of them going into the military it is truly a hard thing to do.But as time goes by you realize you have to give them their wings and let them fly. I have learned to support whatever decision he makes no matter how tough it can be and that when we think it is hard on us not seeing them and holding them it is always much harder for them.Support is the one thing they need all the time.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

I thank you again for your kind words...I looked up what Riverines do..the job seems so scary and dangerous, and I have to keep telliing myself to be proud and not to worry, this is the path my son has chosen...everything is really in the hands of God, no matter what. Susan G. P.S. If you ever get to Southern California, give me a call.

Hi Patty, thank you again for holding my hand and giving good advice. For some reason I am having a hard time, perhaps because he will be leaving training soon and be deployed somewhere. He sent 2 boxes home today, I cried like a baby seeing his teeshirts..what a baby huh? that you again, you are very nice. Susan G

HI Patty, thank you for the reply. Garrett is so happy to get out of Great Lakes. It was a long time coming. Over a year. I am sad that Garrett will be in Mississippi longer than I expected, was hoping we could see him during the holidays. He doen't tell me much about his training. I am sure he will know more once he gets there. At least it will be warmer weather...my California boy hates that cold weather, lol. Take care, Susan G

Hi Patty, my son is leaving for Mississippi on Monday..at first he told us he would be there a month, now he says 2 to 3 months. I just have stopped having expectations. I have heard he may be doing some extra combat training. This whole thing is so scary to me. He is suppose to be stationed here in San Diego..which is a plus, very close to home. He doen't tell me much as he knows I worry so much.. Have a nice weekend, Susan G.

HI Patty, I noticed your posting regarding your son going to Missisippi..My son just received his orders to leave (finally) GL, but goes to Missisippi first then to San Diego where he is stationed. Do you know what type of training they get in Missisippi?

Thank you, Susan G

Hi Connie, Thank You for the information. He thinks he may be coming home for Christmas but I'm kind of doubtful because of the training.Doesn't seem like they would break on training for a holiday-not sure. But he was excited to get started and he is determined to make it.I know he will give it his all and a little more.

Hi Patty, Steven has been training with the Riverines since November 2008. His training has been in parts of Viginia, North Carolina, and Mississippi. He actually graduated on Friday and is now a full fledge Riverine. He begins deployment work ups being Monday. He believes he will stay in the Little Creek area for these work ups.. He will be deployed around April 2010. The way I understand it the Riverines train for six months and go on six month deployments. Your son will do some heavy duty training and have some down time, but if he is like my son, will love every minute of it.
