My daughter left for BC December 13th, almost four years ago. She's been home only twice for the Christmas holidays and this year will be a "no-go" year. Unfortunately, you'll need to get used to this.

I live in the Chicago area and as the saying goes, "If you don't like the weather, just wait an hour." So far we've have incredibly mild weather for this time of year... around 50 during the day, low 40's at night... but that can change! As far as...

Profile Information

About me:
Single mom, my youngest daughter Holly has been in the Navy for almost four years now. She has served an 8 mth. combat deployment in 07 to the middle east and ia 6 mth. deployment to the western Pacific. She is attached to VFA-154 strike fighter group out of Lemoore NAS California. At the end of the '07 cruise, her grandfather (who is a WW2 Navy veteran) and I flew to Hawaii and participated in the Tiger Cruise. Her sister and I were on the Tiger Cruise from Everett, WA to SanDiego this past summer. I had the honor of pinning her in front of her squadron with her Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist pin (ESWS) during the cruise. It's all been the thrill of a lifetime!
I am here to support or represent my:
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
To enjoy every moment... and watch my daughter become an awesome, independent, responsible young woman and follow in the proud Navy tradition of our family. Her grandfather was a 2nd Class Gunners Mate in WW2 and we are thrilled that she has also made 2nd Class.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Navy Times Article - Women on submarines

An interesting subject, to say the least!

SecNav, CNO: Women should serve on subs

By William H. McMichael and Andrew Scutro - Staff writers

Women should be allowed to serve aboard submarines, and the Navy is “moving out aggressively” to make it happen, according to the service’s top civilian.

“I believe women should have every opportunity to serve at sea, and that includes aboard submarines,” Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said Thursday in a statemen… Continue

Paula, small world! My first job was at York Theater and I used to work for Boise Cascade Office Products in Itasca. When I was in college my parents moved to Wood Dale. The boxer is our boy, Asher, and Martha is very close to him. He is 10.5 years old so he is nearing the end of his life. He's had cancer and been hit by a car but he still plenty of spunk. So, is your daughter going to be a pilot? Martha was accepted in Aviation and Surface Warfare. She told her recruiter that Aviation was her first choice so what did she get put in, SWO! We are still new to this Navy stuff. Thanks for writing back. I enjoyed hearing from you!

Wow, Paula, your daughter really has seen the world! My daughter hasn't seen a thing yet. She arrived at her base in June and the ship is in dry dock for another year. She's been in school some, working on quals for her SWO pin and then the poop hit the fan. Even though she is only 6 hours away, has email, cell phone, etc. we hadn't heard from her in 2 weeks. I am NOT used to the lack of communication. Sunday she finally called for about 5 minutes and said they failed a huge inspection. Very disheartening since she was doing things the way they were done before. Anyway, whoever it was that failed them told her, "Don't plan on having ANY holidays this year." So, my hope of her being able to come home or us going up to Virginia for at least one holiday are dead. I could certainly understand that if she were deployed but she has yet to go underway. Okay, my pity party is over! Thanks for letting me vent. :-) By the way, I am originally from Elmhurst, IL.

Paula,
Stupid me! Forgot to add that your daughter is welcome to bring friends - even a car load. I think I have room. LOL. I even know how to cook a turkey and if the kids don't like turkey, we'll have some New York steaks.

Paula, what a generous offer! How about this? I'll tell him about the Chicago Moms get together on the 4th. He came to one back in February, so maybe he'll join you moms and you can pick his brain about the Navy. He's been called "one squared away sailor" by the military here. If he hasn't found a way by then, maybe you can discuss it. He can always take a taxi, but he's trying to be frugal. He'd certainly offer gas money to someone.

To answer both your questions--yes, he's at Great Lakes. No, haven't resolved the transportation issue yet. I wish I could join all of you on the 4th, but that's doubtful.

have to check in every now and then to see if there is new pictures. Love the pinning. Gosh, I know you're proud! my sweet friends posted pictures of my son that were on navy.mil and USS Blue Ridge group on FB, but I had to take them down. :-( Gotta keep a low profile ya know? But it was terribly exciting seeing him and seeing what he does.
