About me:
I am a married mother of 3. My 22 year old daughter has just graduated from the LPN program on August 20th - I am so proud of her! I have a 22 year old son that is married and they run their own business. My baby, Jeremy, is 19 and recently got stationed in Mayport Fla. He loves it there! He is aboard the USS Phillipine Sea. I also have 2 dogs and one grand-dog. I am a big time dog lover. I work from home, so I spend alot of time with my family. My family (yes, that includes my dogs) are my life.

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Needed to learn more about it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
The most important thing that I have learned so far is that Military life is good for any young boy. My son went from a boy to a man in 8 weeks time. He has learned value and respect for life in general. Great experience for him!
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

My daughter is in Hawaii, she works for National Security. My Son just Graduated from the Nuclear Engineering Program in SC. He has signed up for the Naval Officers Academy, so he has a ton of paperwork and interview to do to see if he is accepted. Otherwise he will head to NY for the next phase of his Nuclear Training.

Regina, I'm sorry it took so long to respond. I've been working a ton since we are very short handed at work. My son's squadron is going to be on the USS DeWert when he is deployed next month. My son was told so far that there will be limited space to bring stuff and to bring a sleeping bag as the blanket is thin and it is cold where they sleep. Also, he has to use their internet when out at sea.
How are you?

Regina...I just read your blog above...you son is an officer???...forget everything I just said below...it will probably be different for him!!! The ship stuff will probably be the same! hahahaha...ship is a ship but I bet there is a big difference in enlisted and officer quarters!! Wonder if they have officer quarters??? Robin

Regina...both in the barracks and on the ship...it will be a twin size...They ARE issued sheets and a blanket on the ship...it is just a wool like (nobody likes them) blanket...they are allowed to have their own bedding...any color...they are NOT issued pillows. On the ship he will not need anything more than that bedding and there is no room for anything other than his seabag!! But the barracks is a different story...There they are issued sheets and a flowered bedspread...and that is it...there are different styles and there is not guarantee which he will get...but my daughters quarters has 2 bedrooms with 2 twin beds with 4 drawers I think underneath eaach bed in each room with 2 lockable closests, and armoire (TV cabinet) with 2 drawers and one desk and two end tables with table table lamps and a ceiling fan (carpeted). The main space when you open the front door is a small kitchen area with small sink, cabinets, microwave, smaller frig and a stackable washer and dryer. Then in the hall area is two sinks outside of the bathroom door. In the bathroom is a shower and toilet. The the two bedroom doors are side by side across from the sink area...So 4 girls share this space. The other style is similar but doesnot have washer and dryer in room but are available in the building but you have to pay to use them.
Just make sure he can store what ever you send with him at first until he gets permission to live off the ship. My daughter has 2 sets of bedding...one on ship and one in barracks...2 grooming kits- one in barracks and one on ship...so for those you need 2 of everything...2 toothbrushes, paste, combs, brush...etc...most leave their uniforms on the ship and roll out of bed in the morning...throw on their personal civilian clothes and jump in the car to go to the ship...They get dressed on the ship...They also eat on the ship in the ships galley...so Ali has to be onboard no later than 7:00 am and in uniform for muster at 7:15...so she gets up at 5:00 and walks to the ship (no car yet) and eats and then gets dressed...the BEQ's (bachelor enlisted quarters) aka Barracks are about 3 to 4 blocks from the ships...easily walkable. They have vacum sweepers that they can sign for at the front desk to use and return. The rooms are inspected about once a week...3 fails in 3 months time and you go back to the ship!! So he will need cleaning supplies too!!! hahahaha...I am glad that we went back the next weekend to help her get everything she needed...and to help her organize and take advantage of every little piece of space she had in the closet, cabinets and under the sinks. We also bought her a shower caddy...imagine 4 girls with 4 different shampoos and conditioners and soaps and loofahs...right now the girls are all sick of cleaning after each other and are swearing to paper plates and forks and refusing to buy food!!hahaha wonder how long that will last!...OH and they have to take the garbage out everyday...so lotttttsss of garbage bags medium size. hope this helps!! Robin
