Last week was really the first week for them and the yelling will probably taper off slowly after that. I think during that first week, they yell just to yell. You will have to see if your daughter knows Elice- her MIL is on N4Ms and she is in our ship/Div. They will muddle through, I guess all of this hardship makes them all become a little family. They will have friends from this that will be with them for the rest of their lives. We still keep in touch with people that my husband knew from his Basic Training days. Please tell Ashley that none of it is personal ( I know it is hard not to take it personally when they are standing nose to nose with you), treat it like a game. We already know that she was hand picked to be in this division, not everyone can say that and she is more than capable of winning this game. Not only is she special just because her mom says so, but right now- in BC their division is the Cream of the Crop. Remind her of that. She is there for a reason and as much as they yell, they really know that she is capable of doing it or she wouldn't be there. It's still hard for us moms though to think of someone else yelling at our babies! I have already warned Erik that I don't know if I will be very nice to his RDC- although he is just doing his job- he yelled at my baby!

Renee, I still worry, but I know that as much as it is the RDC's job to yell at them and be hard on them, it is just as much their job to keep them safe and out of trouble. I don't understand the yelling stuff in BC, my husband and I disagree that there has to be a better way than to get in their faces and yell at them. He keeps telling me that it is the "Breaking down process" so they can build them back up. I just say it is head games.

Renee, my son is Erik and he is in your daughters ship and Division. After taking his ASVAB they told him he could take his pick of what he wanted to do and tried to talk him into going into the Nuke program. He is 6feet tall and didn't really relish the idea of being on a sub.He considered the Radiology Technology program, but when they told him he would have to start out as a Corpsman and give shots and take blood, he changed his mind. He can't stand needles. In the end, he decided to go in as an Electrician's Mate. He will have a marketable skill if he decides not to make a career of the Navy and College money if he wants to go back to school for the Rad Tech stuff. He likes to tinker with stuff and see how it works so he should like it. He is not Grad and Go- His schools are all at Great Lakes, so he will be staying there after PIR for a few months. Erik's Dad is retired Career Air Force, so he has some idea of what a military life is like and he is really looking forward to traveling and seeing the world.

Renee, the first couple of weeks are the hardest. As a Mom we are so use to being in control and now we aren't. After you receive your first real letter you will feel a little better. It is perfectly normal to cry at the drop of a hat for no reason at all. I still do it every now and then. Just remember she is in good hands and will be taken care of. Hang in there!

My daughter left today

My daughter is 24 and is the oldest 3 children. She left for basic training this morning. I've had a range of emotions since I found out she wanted to join the Navy. I was doing very well until 2 days before she left. We went shopping for white cotton under things (which after reading some of the blogs, it looks like they will be coming back) and then saying goodbye to her and hugging her the last time in the parking lot of the mall, I just broke down. I've tried to be very strong and supportive… Continue
