He's done with A-school and is at the Strand. He's started A-school on August 1st. Only a little over 3 weeks left at strand and then he's done. But if the fleet is still full then, which I am guessing it will be, he'll just be hanging around GL u...

Hi All - My son is at the strand and should be done around the middle of November. He said they were told that the fleet is full and there aren't any Hull Tech jobs to be had. That means he'll be at Great Lakes until something opens up - which cou...

My son just finished A school on Wednesday and he said they did absolutely nothing for them. No ceremony of any kind. I guess it's just another phase and not as big a deal as graduating from boot camp. they go right from A school to the strand.

Thanks Jeannie - it does make sense and I"m sure you're right. He's just getting over the shell shock of the bc experience and learning to be his own man a little more. He never really had much self-confidence or pride in his actions - so I think ...

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
That a person can really learn a lot in the service, and can go as far as they choose to. My son needed some direction, self-discipline and needed to learn a trade. He'll get all that and more with the Navy, and possibly a chance to see the world that most others never get to experience.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

PIR is over...on to the next phase

Wow - is Great Lakes PIR interesting and exciting! We left the house before 6 am (only half-an-hour behind schedule LOL) and got to Great Lakes at 7. They inspect the vehicle, make you stand outside in a median and you can't even turn around to see what they're doing. It was pretty efficient though and we were parked and in the drill hall at 7:30am. Things have certainly changed since my brother graduated from boot camp in 23 years ago. Back then it was outside and about 98 degrees the day of hi… Continue

The long-awaited phone call finally happened :)

We waited and kept our phones on us at all times on Wednesday, because that's when Bradley called the first time and we missed it. But no call from an unknown 847 area code on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

Yesterday, we were sitting around after lunch trying to decide what to do with the rest of the beautiful day when the phone rang. It was an 847 number that I didn't recognize. So glad I answered - it was Bradley! He sounded good but stuffy. Says he's been sick twice since h… Continue

Updates from boot camp...

It's kind of weird because I am double-blogging. We set up a blog for the family to read about Bradley's exploits in boot camp and I forgot about my blog here. Oh well. Better more info than not enough I suppose.

Bradley's bored - what else is new? He was bored in junior high, high school, at home, and now in the Navy. Sounds like he's even more exhausted than he was before, of that's possible. They are currently in "Hell Week". Sure doesn't sound like fun does it? I'm sure he'll survive - he's… Continue

Finally...some contact

We finally heard from Bradley - sort of. It was mostly form letters from the Navy, but on the bottom of one of the pages, after his mailing address so we could write to him, was a 3 line note. Basically saying that he was fine, and "even though we get yelled at from the time we wake up to the time we sleep, it's still kinda fun". LOL - Guess I made him immune to yelling by hollering at him all these years :) It was great to know SOMETHING, even though it wasn't much, it was a lifeline. We know h… Continue
