Shari,
So nice to meet you on the IS moms page. I see you have two servicemen in. I have a son and a daughter serving. My son was in for 4 years earlier but got out and then decided to go back in. So even tho' he just finished A school he is a fleet returnee so has it a little easier that the newbies right out of BC. My daughter has been in since July 07. She is stationed at Kitsap Naval Base in WA. IS A school is about 13 weeks. It is tough and some students do get put back so it could take longer. Don't be alarmed, your son may do well and get right through it. It does take alot of studying tho'. C school's length depends on what C school he goes for. You'll learn more about that as he progressess through A. Let us know anyway we can help!!

Shari,

That means that right after graduation he leaves for his schooling (which will be the same day). Sorry to say that you will not get to spend much time with him on the day of graduation, but be very proud of him

Hi, Shari-
Welcome to our Moms of IS Sailors group! I see that your son is in boot camp...not a very easy time, is it? I hated not being able to talk with my son and just hear for myself that he was doing ok. Of course, it was the only time in my life so far that I actually received letters from him, so not a total loss! Jim has been in the Navy for one year and is stationed overseas (since November). I miss him tons, but he loves his job and his life there, so I'm happy for him.
Please let us know if we can help answer any questions for you...or just give you a shoulder when you're really missing your son. We all remember boot camp and are happy it's over, so you can whine to us -- we don't mind :) I'm looking forward to getting to know you and hearing about your sailor! Ellen

Dear Shari,
How are you? How was your holiday? My husband helped with the cooking, but of course I was abandoned for clean up!! UGH!! It was just the four of us. I was surprised my son blessed us with his presence.! He still lives at home, but is never around!

How are you holding up with your son leaving today?
He should be calling you probably tomorrow, to let you know he arrived. I just checked over what I already wrote to you. I did give you the run down on what to expect the next few weeks.

It will be hard on you. Your going to be expecting him to walk in the door.
Just keep busy, and please stay in touch with us here. I'm always around as well. We all will keep your sanity going.

Let me get going. Please don't hestitate to write.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara

Shari,

there are some differences in boot camp between what the Marines do and the Navy, first being the box. You will receive all his personal stuff in a box about a week after he gets to GL. Also, my son has been in boot camp for 19 days and still haven't gotten a letter, but I did receive 2 phone calls! Now they were about gathering information for his background check, but I would have killed to hear from my Marine after he first went to MCRD!!

Hi Shari..When did your son graduate from MCRD? Mine was in Kilo Co. 01/09/09! So we now go through boot camp all over again!! My Navy recruit graduates on May 21, I can't wait! Hang in there, we'll get through this together! If you have any questions feel free to email me at kmac252@yahoo.com

Dear Shari,
How are you doing? This Navy for moms is such a blesiing.
Are you going to have a farewell party/dinner for your son, before he leaves?

I had a party for my daughter Kim in her favorite Chinese buffet.

When your son leaves for Great Lakes, he will call you when he arrives on base. That's usualy the next day.

Now, the best thing for you, please stay in touch with other Navy moms. I'm always around as well. Together, we'll help you through Boot Camp...we have't lost a mom yet!! HAHA!

Now what to expect. About a week after your son leaves, you'll recieve the famous box, with all his civialin clothes. SO tell him, when he goes shopping for Boot Camp, be more concerned on his personal hygiene products. He can buy underwear and undershirts, but those usualy are in the box. The Navy supplies everything.

Tell him to basicaly buy shampoo, deordarant, tooth brush/ paste, shaving products. NO colognes, or stuff for his hair, other than shampoo. Nothing with oil or fragrance.

Then you'll receive a form letter, on the back it'll have two sentences from your son. Around the third week, usualy, you'll receive your first long letter from your son.

The return address on this letter, is the address you write back to. He'll probably even call you the following weekend of that letter. He will call around 3-4 times during his stay in Boot Camp. These phone calls are now earned.

Now the graduation package, the half way way point, ( 4 th week). This will have the date your son's Division will graduate (PIR) Reserve a room when you can. The grad. package has the list of hotels.

After that, we waited to purchase the plane tickets a week proir to gradaution. So anytime after you receive the grad. package, is fine on buying your tickets.

After gradation, every graduate Sailor has different permissions. He won't be coming home, you asked that question. Some Sailors can spend the weekend with their family, but must return back on base by 8:00 PM

Other Sailors have a "Grad and Go", they only have maybe three hours to spend with their family, then they get flown to where ever their A School will be. This is written in the graduation package you recieve on the fourth week.

I hope to hear from you again. Please don't hestitate to write.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara
