Can anyone confirm that if my family visits my son in P-cola does he have to have a buddy with him while we visit? He says if he gets liberty he always has to have another sailor with him... any thoughts

About me:
I am updating my page today (11/19/09) to reflect how things are now, over a year and a half since I joined Navy For Moms. My wonderful son is now a 3rd class Petty Officer. He was able to advance so quickly due to the special program he was in since before basic called Accelerate to Excellence. It was a brand new program started in 2007. Since his graduation from Great Lakes on 08/08/08 he has completed his A School and he has his AA Degree. He is now stationed at NAS-JAX.

I share this with everyone because I want you to know that the US Navy has done so much for my Son that I need to share my heartfelt thanks. I am a PROUD MOTHER and not so long ago I was a very frighten one. Letting your child go into the Navy is so hard. I know ..... it was very hard for me, but never think that it is the wrong thing to do. You too, will find great happiness in seeing what the Navy will do for your child. My husband & I have and I want to assure you that the day will come when you have proof that you made the right decision. You will be so Proud of them your heart will burst. Thank God for the Men & Women of the Armed Forces and for the men & women who took our child and gave us back a Man or Woman.

Below is my orginal profile. God Bless.

My husbands name is Ralph. I met him when Derick (his son) was just 9 years old. We married in 2000 and Derick became my son in every way. I love him like I gave birth to him. We are as close as any Mother & Son can be. He is my life. I have two lovely daughters, Tammy & Shannon, that are much older than Derick and they think the world of him. He also has extended family on his Dads side that include a sister & brother. His whole family is very proud of him and there is a large family with Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friends as close as family. God Bless and keep him in his embrace.
I am here to support or represent my:
Derick
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
That you have to let go ...... a little. : ) I know he still loves us as much as ever and will always be my child ..... but he is a man and I can no longer hold his hand every step of the way. God is with him every step however so I have nothing to fear. Derick will be safe.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger
Today I want to update my information on this lovely site. Today is Feb. 11, 2009 and my sons PIR was 08/08/08. The ceremony for the graduation was one of the most heart warming and moving experiences of my life. Looking at all of the young men and women moving on from that moment into the jobs that they choose ..... to serve their country made ..... me believe in the future again. I want to congratulate every parent who has a child taking on such an important job for all of us. You should be very Proud.

Now my son is at Pensacola FL. He was chosen to take part in a special program with the Navy where he has completed his AA Degree there and now he has started "A" School. He already has the rank of Petty Officer.
There are no words to express my Pride in him. He is an Aviation Support Technician.

I have not been here in the site for some time due to time restraints but I am back now and hope to connect with others who are interested in their Navy Family.

With the uncertain future ahead of us at this very trying time I think some advise and encouragement with other Navy people will help all of us.

I hope to hear from you soon.

PIR 08/08/08 My Story

There are many very special moments in the life of a Mother & Son that will always stand out in her mind and I am sure that adding the moment that she sees her son in person in his uniform and realizes that he is a United States Sailor is one of the special ones to add to the thousands she already has. This is the reason I want to tell my story today ..... here on NavyMoms.

You see I did not give birth to my wonderful son. I did not get to see his first step or his first tooth. I did not get to see him off on his first day of school. Dericks Birth Mother died when he was only 5 weeks old. He didn't have a Mother to do all of the things I just mentioned. His Dad was there for all of them and has them to remember. Dericks Dad raised him ..... with the help of a large, loving, extended family until Derick was 10 years old. That was the year I became Dericks Mom. That was the year that we were brought together ..... so that is when I got to start my memories of my wonderful Son. I watched him play his hockey games and cringed every time the puck came at him!!! He played goalie. I held his hand when he was stitched up at the hospital when he fell off his bike. I spent hours homeschooling him for 3 years and then saw him excel when he was in High school. I watched him give his life to God in the church when he was baptized. I was the Mom with the biggest smile out there when he took part in the J.R.O.T.C. programs in high school. I sat and cried through his High School graduation. I have so many wonderful memories of my Son. I love him with all my heart and I always will. On 08/08/08 I sat with his Dad and watched him officially become a United States Sailor and I nearly burst with Pride and Joy. There are no words to explain how it felt. It was as if no one else was in the room and there were 1000's of other people there. Derick is my Pride and Joy and as he travels on the path that he has chosen for himself I know that I will always be a part of him ..... deep inside and he will always do the right thing. His Father here on earth and his Father in Heaven watch over Derick ...... His Mother on earth and his Mother in Heaven will also be there watching over him. So you see ...... in the end Derick has so many to watch over him and be there for him ...... he has made memories for a lot of people.

Hi, Wonderful Wesselings!
I, too, just spoke to my sailor! Apparently, he and Derick are buddies. Jake said he's "cool" & that he likes Derrick a lot. High praise, indeed. I hope you found the emails I sent you. Thanks again for EVERYTHING!!! See you TOMORROW! Travel safely.
Fondly,
Barbara

Simone-
You and Ralph are officially my new favorite people! You are so kind and understanding! Thank you so much. It is sort of scary to take this on, but I was serious about it all being about the young men we are honoring.
Thanks for placing your order. You were the first of course! ;-D I can't wait to give you both a big hug. (I hope you are OK with hugs from strangers.)
Did you see my countdown thingy? Please thank Ralph for me. I love it! You may wish to warn him about the upcoming hug he is going to get from me!
You have both been warned!
See you so soon! :-D

Simone,
Thanks for the kind words. It was sort of scary to plan something like this dinner, not knowing if anyone would be interested. I do have the advantage of having eaten at the Silo so I know the food there is terrific. This is going to be an amazing couple of days. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone.
Did I ever tell you that Jake goes to Auburn? I am not sure where St. Marys is, but Jake has lots of friends in Atlanta. He loves going to school in the south. Very different from Minneapolis!
Take care! I look so forward to meeting you and Ralph, as well as Meghan and Derick.
Just days now!
