Convincing my son to join-right or wrong?

I've come late to this "party", but I was curious as to what my friend Bea had to say. My older son is an officer in the Navy, commissioned August 2008. The military is not a choice I fostered for ei…

Son has a degree but was encourgaged to go enlisted?

My son had his BA, and went into DEP about a year later. He preferred going in as an officer, but was willing to go enlisted. He took a lot of different exams, but eventually the Navy decided to send…

Our son was commissioned two years ago, so a few things may have changed. We saved a little money by staying closer to Providence and renting a car. Prices were pretty high in Newport. The two events we attended were Hi Moms and the graduation. (Hav…

Pat, the ship is currently in port, and will be there for a few days. Does your son have his orders yet? Usually takes a couple of weeks to square everything away, and TrekkieDad is right, most likely will go to Pearl first, but not always. When our…

We haven't heard yet when or where he will meet the ship, but he is very excited about his orders. Thanks for hosting this group.

Since the O'Kane is underway, Pat, I'm guessing your son will first report to the command at Pearl Harbor. It could be a while before he's actually sent out to the ship.

Our son just got orders to O'Kane. He's a new supply officer coming out of Athens.

TrekkieDad, when our daughter watched her first ship deploy without her, she said it was incredibly hard - she wanted to be on it so badly. But, everything happens for a reason and worked out for a reason.

Our son's first deployment. Just left GM A School at Great Lakes a 3 weeks ago. Excited about his new adventure. Don't know what to expect but excited just the same.

@Paymaster: my son's ship left w/o him, as he just had knee surgery. We just sent his brother over to Hawaii to give him a hand for as long as they can stand one another. As for me, I was in a multi-bike crash on Wednesday and spent a couple nights…

Very little pain or discomfort. Getting around with crutches ok. I think I even surprised the hospital staff at how quickly I was up and about. They kept saying they couldn't believe that I was 60 yo. Today I had my wife take me to the bike shop whe…

Just outside the town of Woodbridge. The lead rider, who has combat first aid training in the army, attended me until help arrived. Spent some time in the ER in Lodi, and then I was transferred to San Joaquin General, where I spent the first night a…

Yes, indeed! I had hoped to go skiing with Lydia while she's here on the East Coast, but she injured her leg over New Year's and isn't quite healed yet. Instead, I think that she and Steve will try to come down to the DC area to sightsee one weekend.

My daughter Lydia was aboard - and I have discovered that you have met her! Lydia and I took Steve to dinner last night at Roy's in thanks for the nice dinner you treated her to when you visited here in Hawaii. I had the opportunity to watch as the ship came into dock but my pictures look just like the ones you have already posted at the top of the group page. (Lydia was not on the rails since she had the conn and your son was on the bridge as the JOD (Junior Officer of the Deck). I suspect he is there by now and I know you will have a very Happy Holiday all together.

Cheers,
Amy
