About me:
Hello. My name is Vickie and we are from Girard, Ohio, right outside of Youngstown. My son is joining the Navy in June, he will be in the Delayed Entry Program until graduation from high schoool in 2009.

I found this site and I am hoping to become very informed so I can support him on this journey. So far, I love this site! I'm on it constantly! I have met some wonderful new friends. And it is so nice to talk to other people going through the same things!

I work in the legal field and love it! But truly the job I love most is being a mom. I am the mother of three boys ~ 17, 7 and 11 months ~ a stepmother to a beautiful girl age 21 and step-grandmother to her little boy who will soon be 2! Together Mike ~ the world's greatest Dad ~ and I have created a wonderful ~ BIG ~ blened family. We are a family filled with love and support for our son and brother who will soon be joining the United States Navy.

This is not to say that I don't have fears for my son ... so many fears. But for some reason after our first meetin with Rich's recruiter, I didn't feel fear, I felt a sense of calm. My son truly feels he has a calling to serve his Country and what mother wouldn't be bursting with pride after hearing that?!
I am here to support or represent my:
Richard (17) ~ Navy Bound!, Nicole (21), Aidan (7), Garrett (11 Months) and our Grandson, Mason (2 in August)
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
In high school, Thinking about joining
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid, Needed to learn more about it, Was proud, Said “No way!”
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
I want to support my son 100% in his decision to join the Navy. This is not to say that I do not have fears, I have lots of fears! However, he has chosen a path in life that he truly wants. I am so proud. And since Mike and I sat down and talked to Richie about what he truly wants, we've grown even closer with him. WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU RICHIE!

Honor, Courage and Commitment..

I think I'm saying this right, Honor, Courage and Commitment!

Has anyone purchaesed this book? I ordered it from Amazon a few days ago and it has already arrived. Rich and I are both reading it and learning a lot! The more I am reading about the Navy the more at ease I am starting to feel about my sons decision.

FIREFIGHTING ...

Richie thinks he wants to become a fireman in the Navy. Now, I know that I am more than likely not using the correct term for this career. I have my work cut out for me here ... anyone out their have a child and/or loved one in this field? I would love some information!

Take Care!

The First Meeting with Rich's Recruiter ...

Well, here we are, one month before Rich enters the DEP program. We've had our first meeting with the recruiter. He answered all my questions. Answered all Rich's ... then why do I still have such a, shall we say, "fear". Perhaps it is the fear of the unknown. Perhaps it is the fear of letting go of my first born. Perhaps it is the fear that I won't be able to handle not seeing him daily ~ or the fear that he won't be able to do it either.

I am so proud of him. He has such focus, he has never w… Continue

Hi Vickie
I was looking through the Ohio members list and saw you were from Girard. I live in Austintown. My brother lives in Girard. Your son may know my nephews. How is he doing with the DEPPERS? My son has been in since he graduated in 06. He was a DEPPER too. Now he is on the aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower and is getting set for his second deployment soon. If I can answer any navy questions let me know.

I forgot to tell you how sorry I am to read about your Son's Friend. I am sure you are all devestated. You are in my thoughts and prayers. My Brother is a local fireman and he just called me 15 minutes ago and asked if all my kids were accounted for? I told him that 3 of my kids were at their Dad's house (2 miles from me) and he said get them on the phone and see where they are. I got on my other phone line with my Brother still on the phone and thankfully all my kids were either at baseball practice or at home! My Brother then proceeds to tell me that there is a local traffic accident where 4 people are seriously injured, one killed instantly and the other 3 life flighted out to the hospital. This happend on the route my children drive to and from school. I felt like I had to instantly throw up. I am not sure how much more my nerves can take.

Vickie~ hey you! I am doing ok I guess. It is still emotional today but not as bad as yesterday. I tried to hold back my emotion for as long as possible which maybe in hindsight wasn't the best thing. I didn't lose it until the *final hug*. I am tellin ya now, that is the hardest darn part!!! Unfortunatley, I dont think there is anything you can do to prepare for it either. Our time with Andrew was great and I wouldn't change a thing. The party was a great success and everything was just the way I wanted it to be for him. It was a week full of emotion for the entire family. His Sister had a very difficult time saying goodbye to him. She is 2 1/2 yrs younger than Andrew (she turns 18 next month). That was hard for me to see. I think Mother's Day is gonna be another really hard day for me to get through. I guess I need to prepare myself for the rest of my children leaving the nest sometime in the near future too. Thanks for your compliments. Logan's shirt came from a place online called cafe press and they have a ton of Navy shirts. He looked so cute in it. The cake turned out perfect also. Anyway, I am surviving at this point one day at a time.

Good Morning Vickie~
I was just posting a blog entry as you wrote to me. We must have been on the same train of though :0) The party is tomorrow and the out of town guests have begun to arrive. I have such a busy day today with some of our other kids on top of all the prep for tomorrow. Thank goodness his party isn't until 2pm. Thanks for thinking of me girl!! I am nervous.

Vickie~ It would be so cool if our Son's met at GL. What day does Richie leave again?? I am still trying to get to know everyone on here so forgive me if you already told me and I forgot!! As far as these Dad's go, I am not sure what goes through their minds but as the Mom it makes me so sad to see Andrew so upset by his Dad's actions. I just hope Andrew learns from the entire situation and pray his Dad comes around at some point down the road. It has been about 3 yrs now since he has spoken to him. Andrew has made several attempts but gets shot down by him each time.

Hi Vickie, I just finished washing Carrier. Its a great show, I just felt so sorry for that young man with the girl and all. I hope everything works out for him and he finds somebody really special. I had to pull out the Kleenex for the ending, that homecoming was just too much. How about you, did you get to see it tonight?
