I came home this afternoon and the box was here. His cellphone, phone card, pictures, and clothes (including his nasty socks) were inside. I have looked at his handwriting over and over. This week is almost over, and I am so very glad. Waiting on ...

I am much better today. I was listening to Michael Jackson's Heal the World this afternoon, and I realized that my son is doing what I have raised him to do and that is to give back to others.

My son arrived at bootcamp Monday night (the 16th), and I received the box today. The phone card we bought was inside with all his clothes including his nasty socks. I guess the form letter is next. I am glad this week is almost over.

Hi Ann,
I tried to catch you on the chat last night, but I'm not sure I understood how to do it properly, and by the time I think I figured it out, you were gone, I guess! Just wanted to check in to see how your weekend went. We spent the weekend packing my daughter and son-in-law's apartment up and moving the rest of their things to the storage in Charleston, so it can all be shipped. She got her ticket yesterday - December 12th, on the same flight he was on last week. Coastal is out all week, so she's going to my sister's for the week in upstate NY, since my sister can't fly for health reasons, and they likely won't see each other for several years, then two more weeks of the semester and that'll be it. My husband's already talking about tickets to Hawaii for spring break...

Hey Ann,
I know what you mean about thinking other people think you are crazy. Maybe they do, however, you have a multitude of Navy moms who know exactly how you feel and don't think you are crazy one bit! You are a Mother of a son who has joined with the greatest military in the world. We know those feelings you are experiencing all to well. I think back to the first time I went grocery shopping after my son left and I came across a particular snack item that he really, really liked but I did not buy it because he was not at home to enjoy it. I stood there in the store staring at a snack item with my eyes filling up with tears as people walked by. Crazy? Nope, just a mother missing her son. You hang in there . . . we "crazies" will stick together, ha, ha! :)

Hello Ann, Just checking in with you today to see how you are doing. Hope you get your son's address soon. Being able to write letters will make things seem so much better. Contact again . . . how wonderful! Take care!

YAY on getting through the "BOX" hurdle! It's a toughie! You need to go to the SC group and read all about our BOX experiences! They're a hoot and very similar! Have a great day!

Good morning, Ann. My almost 16 year old wants to join the Navy now, too, but he's thinking he'd like to do it through ROTC first, like his cousin, who's on a full scholarship at Virginia Tech, courtesy of the Navy. That was my son-in-law's plan, too, but he didn't take an elective journalism class seriously his senior year and flunked it, so he lost his full scholarship at Maine Maritime and decided to go straight into the Navy and earn his education that way. He's already got the equivalent of about eighty credits just through nuke school - they pushed those kids incredibly hard. Our youngest son wants to be him, and I'm certain that he wouldn't have even given it a thought without Mark coming into our lives. Of course, he'll have to learn not to talk back first :). We already told him that if he wants to go into the military, that's fine, but not Army or Marines - I've got friends with kids in both, and that I couldn't take. Plus, what exactly does a Ranger do when he gets out? They're not skills that are particularly transferable. What prompted your son to make the choice to join?
I'm sure Elizabeth will be fine - Mark will make sure of that for us. He really is a great kid, or we never would have supportive of them marrying so young - she's not quite 20 and he's just 21. They're the kind of kids who have been mature since the day they were born, though, and they really are perfect for each other. They were introduced by friends of each who were talking about their geek friends, and it occurred to each that they should introduce them. Turned out that they had each done some stupid dating survey on Facebook months earlier and were in each other's suggestion file, based on the answers, but they didn't find that out until months later when Mark actually clicked on the link to delete the application. Today he has his appointment with the housing office and then has to go straight to set up her ticket, so it's all been theoretical, sort of, until today, when we'll have a date for when she leaves.
I'm not up on boot camp. When do you get to talk to Thad again? I'm sure that if you have any questions about boot camp Mark can answer them. He's got nothing better to do at night for now except to answer emails, especially with the time difference!
Hope you have a great day!

Good Morning Ann, I'm glad you got to talk with your son. As for how he sounded, just remember he has already been through alot. There has been alot of information thrown his way, alot of waiting and rushing, the flight, and on and on. I'm sure he was already tired; he will be okay. You take care of yourself so when you do get the opportunity to speak with him again you can encourage him along his way. I hope you have a good day!
