I am so sorry for how tough things are for your son - and as a mom I know it's just as tough for you! I am praying for both of you!

I've read your comments on the nuke moms page & believe that your son is lucky to have you. Our nuke guys can buy just about anything but they can't buy Mom's home baked brownies & chocolate chip cookies. During a phone conversations with Jim I told him to look for a package that I had sent. He practically giggled when I said "yes" to his question "Does it have baked goods?" It's one way for us to give them a hug from home. I use the post office flat rate boxes, wrap the cookies in pairs, back to back & fill in the voids with popped popcorn to prevent shifting.
Hugs to you.

An ELT (Engineering Laboratory Technician) is a Machinist Mate who is responsible for testing and controlling the chemical makeup of the water in the primary loop (thru reactor and heat exchanger) and the secondary loop (thru heat exchanger and steam turbine). ELT's also check for radiation leakage and in some cases monitor exposure. That's the short version. It appears that ELT school is run like a short version of prototype covering a new area of knowledge and training.

ELT and welding school are optional after prototype for MM's. If wanted and do well in prototype it often is offerred.

Ruth, thanks so much for the words of support, especially the part about reminding him to take the good with the bad. I'm sure he'll eventually get through these feelings, but it really has knocked me for a loop to hear him so upset, angry and negative. He takes him comps next week, and the stress of all that, even tho' he's been doing well, probably has alot to do with this.

Dear Ruth, I happened to see your post re: Son's needing a second attempt tomorrow. My son graduated from Nuke school March, 2008... but there were many "tearful" phone calls between us before he did. Your son will be in my prayers all day; I'll have a sticky note on my desk with his name.

You're doing the right thing, telling him that washing out of Nuke school is not an indication of his character, nor will it affect your love for him. It's times like these that break our "mom" hearts, but all of you will get through this. Hugs, k.

Profile Information

About me:
My name is Ruth and I am a very proud mom of Stevahn. He is the oldest of 3 and I miss him every day and and so proud of him. He is a great example of a human being and I still cant believe God let me be his mom.
I am here to support or represent my:
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Officer
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
I had to let him go a little more. I had to realize that he was becoming a man and the Navy was the best place to let him do that. They take good care of him and I am thankful to them for that.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.
