What's happening now...
October 11, 2009
So our Nuke is gone. He left for BC on the 8th. We are in the hurry up and wait mode for address, PIR date and just any kind of news.
He was understandably nervous as he walked out the door with his recruiter on the 7th. I was a wreck and crying harder than I wanted to be. Never in a million years could I have said that my son will someday be in the military and he may make it a career. I am unbelievably proud and excited for the opportunities and experiences that lie ahead for him. Now, if we would just get some news and hear how he is surviving BC.....
August 2009
Several months have passed since I first wrote of those hectic, unexpected and exciting days at MEPS. The idea of Todd leaving for the Navy and serving our country is now firmly a part of our everyday thoughts and plans. I added a countdown clock today- it marked the 53 day point. I still get choked up when I think of him actually leaving, us, home, family and his life as a civilian.
I do however firmly believe this is the right decision and this will be the making of my boy into the man I want him to become. We have met so many people over the last months who have served in the Navy and each and everyone say "it was the best thing that ever happened to them"! That brings me a lot of hope and comfort. Letting go of a child is hard but the time has come to let him go and experience his own life in a new and exciting way.
Jan 2009-
It's been an exciting couple of days. Our son did awesome on the ASVABS and auto qualified for the NUKE program! At this point he ships out October 8th, 2009, with the slight chance of being bumped up to June or July.
We met him on day 2 of MEPS and sat in on his meeting with the classifier. We received a lot of information and answers from the classifier. In fact everyone we spoke to was extremely friendly and not at all put off that we were there.
We watched his swearing in and then went out to celebrate!
It was a long day but if you can be there I would encourage any parent to go. Seeing and talking to so many young people that were there alone, it seemed many of them could have used some parental support.

Marissa went back to legal about her knee and she was able to get a second opinion. Unfortunately, she will still be separated from the Navy. They did manage to put her on the ground floor in her ship so that she's not walking up and down stairs, but they haven't done anything else to help her. She's at the point now where she has accepted the situation. She will be getting married to a sailor in a few weeks, so she won't have to worry about insurance coverage for the knee. I hate to see her give up like that, but she really feels she has no other choice. Marissa will be fine - she's good at adapting to change.
I wrote to a friend from high school that just retired from the Navy as an attorney. He had no expertise in medical issues, but he did give me some insight into the Navy mentality about injuries. He wrote: "The sad fact is that the economy drives a lot of this. When recruiting dries up, the military will tolerate just about anything. But when kids need jobs, and the military has lots of enlistees, it will often push people out for the most trivial of reasons. And, as long as they get an honorable discharge, they may have no right to contest the discharge (depending on how far along they are in their career)."
That sounds like the sad reality a lot of our kids are facing with their medical separations. I guess it's just not worth it to the Navy to invest in a little more time and testing to get a proper diagnosis or treatment for these sailors. I'm hoping things work out for your son in a way that you can all have peace and a sense of satisfaction. Susan
Haven't heard anything lately and wondered what was going on with Todd? Is he still in Great Lakes, or home? I hope things are improving and you were able to have a good holiday. I talked to my son yesterday and he is doing great. His back is not bothering him and he sounds really happy. Will keep you and your family in my prayers!!!
Take care!
