Hi Debby, you can meet your daughter at the airport and get a gate pass when she is is checking in. You'll just need to find out if she is flying out of Midway or O'Hare. Both males and females go to NAS Pensacola for aviation training.

Debby, Tell your daughter not to worry, things will change. If it's anything like when my son went, he did had to wait months before starting classes because there were so many more there for A school then there were classes. I don't know how many times he changed barracks, at one point he was housed with the marines. At first they had him in maintenance (janitor duties) but it wasn't long before someone recommend him for office work. He loved that, he was setting up the new instructors on the computer and , although he did not use for personal stuff, he was able to keep up on the news reports back home (considering we live in a small town in GA, I was surprised at first when he asked about things going on and often knew thing s before I did.) She should make friends soon but caution her about who she hangs out with. My son said there were quite a few who had no common sense and made bad decisions financially and those who go crazy being away from home for the first time. Nick, who grew up quick when his dad died when he was 15, often complained about the ones who were picked up underage drinking & their whole group would be punished even though many did not even know the ones who were disorderly. It help to teach them to look out for each other. He also said some of the girls were getting bad reps so your daughter will want to avoid those too. I hope this helps. My son hated Pensacola the most and was glad when he finely graduated there and moved to Jacksonville. He is in the Mad Foxes, finished boot camp in Dec of '07 and is Petty Officer 2nd class. He is on the P-3's

Debby, oops I guess I misspoke...after talking to my son, the jobs are assigned in Jacksonville, not Pensacola. ( I got the placement wrong I guess)... For now, your sailor will have PT twice a day, and then kept busy in some basic classes and cleaning/scrubbing duty. Good time to catch up some books... my son said :)

Hello Debby. I don't know that I can add much to what Storymom said below. Just know that she is in good hands. You must remember that the classes move slowly. Or so it seems. She will be on hold for a while until it's time for the class ahead of her to move on. Trust me that she will be kept busy cleaning, scrubbing floors, etc... She may get tired, but in the end it's all worth it. Please keep us informed in the Aircrew group and we will help you through this.

It was hard to find you! You posted something somewhere about aircrew, but it came out as a posting to our private emails at home, to all aircrew moms. You should re-post on the Aircrew Group page, just by joining the group, and then just add a comment, don't start a new discussion up at the top...just comment right where there's a big blank rectangle and then click on "add comment" You'll get lots of support and advice and guidance that way. (I think you already joined the group?) But there was no way to respond to your comment from the email..I really had to LOOK you up and discover your home page with some searching...not easy.

But, I know what you're going thru, (and your daughter too)..I know what you mean...my son experienced the same thing, but a day later a roommate showed up and its been good. Takes some adjustment and they even put the "wardrobe closed down the middle of the room, and gave each other some privacy, like another wall sort of. One reads late at night, the other guy likes to hit the rack, early. She will be assigned a "job" while waiting for class to start. She could ask around to see what kind of jobs she might like. My son raised his hand for "Parachute shop", and ended up packing up the flightbags& equipment, emergency kits, etc for lthe aircrew going up on flights on a daily basis. He got to know them, and had a great time working close to the planes, in the hangers. He also WASHED a few P-3's too, and said THAT was very interesting..takes 5 sailors 6 hours! every nook and cranny gets washed and scrubbed. The Navy will keep her busy til class starts, that's for sure. Tell her no worries, it takes some adjustment...she will find her way...(it sure is heartbreaking tho, isn't it??)

I am not sure of any place that you can see the base or barracks before they get there. When they are in school it is dorm type living

Hope that helps
