About me:
I'm the mother of a 20 year old son who just graduated from boot camp in Great Lakes. The graduation weekend was something I will never forget. We also have a 10 year old son who will enter 4th grade in the Fall. This whole thing is surreal for me. Pride/fear/concern/more pride/ and on and on and on!
I am here to support or represent my:
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Expect the unexpected.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Have Your Sailor Create a Facebook Group before He/She leaves for Boot Camp!

Our son created a Facebook Group, "Grant's Navy Life" before he left for Great Lakes boot camp and made me the administrator. As we get information I update the group which keeps everyone informed and minimizes the # of letters that our son would respond to. He explained on the initial posting that he wouldn't be able to respond to all letters so his Mom would keep everyone updated. He has over 300 members! The response, inspiration, encouragement, (and even emotional support that I've gotten fr… Continue

Overwhelmed, proud, and just, well, maybe a bit freaked out!

I honestly don't know where to begin or even do here - our life is full of so many firsts lately (I've never blogged in my life, I actually think this is the first time I've even read blogs) and it all just seems so surreal.

This past Memorial Day will certainly be our most memorable. It was the day we delivered our son, Grant, to the US Navy. I never in my wildest dreams ever expected to have "military" in front of "mom" and have no experience in this area whatsoever. Our son spent a year at C… Continue

Hey melissa! My fiance is also in Div 835 and we have a group for our division if you search for it it's called The Lovin for Ship 4 Div 835 :) I'm located in Turlock, CA about an hour south of Sacramento my fiance is going for SWCC :) There's a meet and greet the night before PIR at flanagan's about a mile away from base. All are welcome to come, there's also a group for our graduation group that has a ton of awesome ladies in it. Nice to meet a fellow 835er :) Happy Tuesday!

Best Tip: get traveler's insurance in case you have to change your travel dates.

Congratulations To Grant! I hope you will fair better than I did at Mikes Boot Camp Graduation. I was not just crying I was sobbing so hard I could barely see. LOL Luckily I have pictures to look at. Next your son will have A school. The lenght and location depends on his career path. Mike is in Navigation so his A School was in Great Lakes also, across the street from Boot Camp.
If he really likes his field the A school should feel much easier than boot camp. It is more like college with the discipline and fitness. You have a little free time and can have some fun. I will keep you both in my prayers.

Hi Melissa, It was interesting reading your blog. 5 years ago I felt just as you when my 18 year old joined the Navy. I didn't have a place like this to go and share my fears/concerns. This site is so helpful and informative. It is great to share with others. Be sure you son will enjoy the adventure of his life in the Navy. I Thank you and your son for the courage to serve Our Great Country.

Welcome to one of the fastest and emotional roller coaster in your life. Loved your blog. I have to be honest with you I don't think to many of us moms have done to much of this bloging,e-mailing stuff. i know I haven't. You came to the rite place. There is always someone here that will or can find the answer your questions. I wish you all the fun with this time in your life that I have had. Military moms are different from other moms and sometimes they don't understand what it is that we go through. I don't know were I would be with out this site. Welcome again and tell your son thank you from me for severing his country......Kathy

Hmm, I don't think Grant did preBUDs, he is in SWCC and he told me while still in Great Lakes it was alot of PT. He gets briefed today he said so I should know more later this week. And we LOVE the fact that he's in Coronado, we are in northern CA...

We also got a call from Grant today advising that he has moved across the street "(a resort in comparison" was his comment!). I couldn't believe the calm I heard in his voice compared to the last few calls home before PIR. He has 2 other roommates...
