We are in South Carolina right now and they housing office here said it can take up to 3 pay cycles for BAH to get 'activated' so they split up our first month's BAH over 2 paychecks (about 550 each, which yes, sucks but you never really see it an...

Just because you get a certain amount for BAH doesn't mean thats how much housing is. There are a number of different housing communities here in San Diego for example that don't talk all of your BAH. So like we get 1900 a month for BAH and our ho...

Ok, this is very tricky. Our BAH didn't kick in for two months and we had to pay out of pocket for our housing, we STILL have not been paid back for those two months we paid out of pocket and its been 6 months (hes deployed, I've done all I can he...

It can take a couple pay cycles for BAH to begin. However, there is no way to pay up front for housing. He'll have to ask PSD and housing how it works. I've never run into your particular situation.

Hey Kasie! How are you? I miss talking to you too. Sorry that I haven't been on here in forever. I've just been so incredibly busy! Between school, work and the wedding planning I just don't know what way to turn anymore. How is all of your wedding planning coming? Have you found a place for you two to live? Fill me in on what all you've been up to!

Moving into the unknown is stressful, but you can do it. It certainly won't kill you, and later you will have experience and funny stories. Then you can give advice to new Navy wives!

Hang in there, pay attention to details but don't sweat the mistakes. Not only will you survive, you will have a blast.

Hawaii? Laid back and casual. Use lots of sunscreen all the time, like a daily sunblock moisturizer. Be prepared to take yours shoes off indoors in homes. Shop on base for groceries. Visit the mulitcultural center at least once. Try to make it down to Big Island (I love Kona). Take advantage of the farmers markets. Be a tourist now and then, don't miss out on all the fascinating history just because you live there. Try to hula, it is fun. Enjoy the many cultures, Japanese, Chinese, Filipine, Pacific Islander ... so many! Try all the new foods.

Hi, yes I have lived in Hawaii, but I was a kid, 12 years old, in 1967~69! It was great, but all the Navy stuff has changed a lot.

I really don't recommend you living on base housing in HI. It is not true about rentals being so expensive out in town. If it's just 2 of you looking for like a 1 bedroom apartment, you can find one for around $1200~ $1500. E-1 to E-4 gets around $1949 for living out in town. So you can pay rent, utilities, cable, telephone and you can still pocket some money. Take a look at this.

http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/apa/1131629750.html

1 bedroom 1 bath in Waikiki for $1150. Look around more on Craigslist and you'll see it is not expensive at all to live out in town because you get paid more than enough for it.

But if you live on base housing, they will take $1949 away from you and you still have to pay for cables and phone and you end up with no money. Don't listen to people who never lived there saying everything is expensive in HI.
