Joe started FMTB training at CP yesterday. Fairly stressful and not all that relevant yet - lots of mustering, yelling and scrubbing. He is having some difficulty sleeping which doesn't surprise me. peace.

Thanks for asking Jac - Joe seems concerned about FMTB. He was home this weekend and did not seem as carefree as usual. Of course bickering with his gf does not help. He can do it, though. No choice. How is your son? peace

Michele, I wanted to ask if they saw a difference in the ability to reintegrate after a deployment with younger male sailors. Do you have an opinion on that?

About me:
I have been married for 29 years and my sweet son who is soon to be a sailor is 18 years old. His sister is 25 years old and was married to a good guy on 08/08/08. Joe left for bootcamp on 10/08/09 from San Mateo. I have very mixed emotions about the whole thing. My kid is frisky and I pray for him, the Navy, my husband and daughter!
I am here to support or represent my:

Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was concerned or afraid
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Joe will learn more about himself then his dad or I could ever hope to teach him.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.
My son leaves San Francisco for bootcamp on October 8 and then intends to train as a hospital corpsman. Any advise for me or him?

Peace

If his unit is on a MEU ( see my other post) he'll be on a ship, but there are no guarantees. They do alot of PR work on those cruises, building schools, hospitals, etc, but if a situation develops, like in Lebanon, or whereever, then they are handy to go assist. Many Marine unites are deploying to Afghanistan, they do 7 month deployments, and then another Marine unit takes their place, so it's ongoing.

Lori, if your son is a greenside corpsman, serving with a Marine unit, he will deploy wherever they are assigned. My son was deployed with a Marine Expeditionary Unit on a Mediterran cruise for 6 months with his unit, and he deployed to Iraq with them as well the next year for 7 months. Part of the training for Iraq and Afghan deployment takes place at 29 Palms before each deployment. Is your son stationed at 29 Palms or is he stationed out of Camp Pendelton or Camp Lajuene and simply training at 29 Palms with his unit?

First Marine Division Website Is this the unit he is with? If you would like to message me privately with his unit info, I'll help you find the correct web site and information.

Ask your son for more specific info about his Marine unit...the battalion, the regiment, the company he is in. We can find their web site. Also tell him when anyone asks for your email address/phone number to give it to them. Message me with the Marine info, and we'll hunt down the information on it.

I wrote a lot more, then noticed I was over the limit. We can talk about this more on the Moms with Kids in Iraq/Afhan group!

Peace out, and peace is good...don't worry yet, mom....

Hi Lori, Hard to say he 'liked' his ship time. They have crushing schedules and are constantly required to do "qualifications" of all kinds. Little sleep time in a 24-hr period, very spartan surroundings---the 'racks' where they sleep are so small, the food is, well-it sustains them. This is how my son put it when I asked him what it was like being on the cruise: "Imagine you are going on a cruise liner and you have to do the cooking, cleaning, taking out of the garbage, and generating the electricity all yourself." He said they had fun on WOG day----it's a ritual day of antics when they cross the equator. It actually dates back to ancient times. The port calls on the way home were all interesting--Phuket, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Bremerton--I think everybody liked liberty days! It's been quite an adventure and we were able to follow alot of it on N4Ms.
