Son leaving for Boot Camp next week

Hello everyone.. My name is Sue. I have actually had the honor of reading many cool blogs throughout the past month, but i decided its my turn to chime in and get a better feel of some things. My son has leaves for boot camp Tues, the 3rd of Nov. As all of you know, it is breaking my heart into a bazillion pieces.. He is my baby to say the least and if i had it my way (as sick as it sounds) I would keep him that way for the next 40+ years :).... so letting go has been very hard even though I hav… Continue

Hey Sue! Hope you are doing well! Have you heard from your son, a REAL Letter, yet?

Not a girl scout leader but a teacher....I guess that is similiar.....always trying to be creative in my ideas. ha ha You can say WHATEVER "inside" the letters. The RDCs never read them. Just address the outside with his official name. I think they call them out at mail call. There is a pic in the Keel book (probably staged as most are) of a few guys standing with letters and the others gathered around. Not sure if this is how they really do it or not.

Could you drive his car to his school and then take a flight home?

I don't think he will be sad if you send the pics. They "want" to have a piece of home and be reminded of where they came from. Ask him he if would like pics or not. That will settle it. If I were way, I'd want pics to remind me....to see the faces. Shoot, I'd even want something corney like having them hold up signs that say "Miss you", "Proud of you!", etc. I think it would make him feel great to know that you all went to so much trouble to stage cute pics just for him...just my thoughts. Some of them have girlfriends or wives and you can only imagine how sappy those letters are back and forth. ha ha
If his cologne is SPRAY, I would spray the letters with his cologne. Tell him to smell them. He probably misses his cologne since he always wore it. Whatever scents he is missing- send them on your letters. He'll like it. I didn't do that but I now wish I would have. Wish I would have known about the Snuggle dryer sheets when he was in BC. ha ha I would have sent one with each letter. LOL

Once he gets to A School- things will be so much better as far as communication. He can have his cell phone and laptop (or he can buy one there). The first month, they have to wear their uniform at all times (on and off base)-phase 1. Then, they get phased up-phase 2- they can wear civilian clothes when they aren't at school and they can go off base. Phase 3-they can put in for over-night off base. Meaning that if they want to stay out past curfew-they put this paper on their bunk (or whatever) and they can come in whenever they want past curfew. I talk to Jared about every other day. They can't have their phones during class or study hours. With Jared's school, they have mandatory study hours every night and on Sundays. At P'Cola, they might not have that. Things do get better as you will also be able to send him care packages and send him bedding (if you want to). I sent Jared a set of t-shirt sheets and a comforter (as our family LOVES t-shirt sheets). Their beds are twin XLG (like a dorm size). I imagine P'Cola would be the same size. You can send him clothes, snacks, or whatever. There is life after BC- and the communication gets so much better!!!! Plus, they usually get to come home for about one week after they finish their first A School. Any idea how long Zach's A school is?

Truth...it doesn't "get easier" , you just find ways to fill your days and try to stay positive and become addicted to the support you find on this site. Remember..."this too shall pass." The good and the bad for you in your situation is that Thanksgiving and Christmas seem to sneak up on you as you get really busy. At least, maybe the hustle and bustle of it all will help the time to fly somewhat. After Christmas...you will be planning and anticipating your travels to GL. Take pics of the family over the holidays and send them to Zach. You will be giving him a piece of home. Funny thing is that I sent Jared at A School a new comforter and sheet set. The comforter I bought here and so I washed it and used my Snuggle sheets to dry it. When he got it, he told my husband "My comforter smells s-o-o good....it smells like home!" Ahh...the little things. So, if you use bounce sheets or anything that will remind him of home- send it as long as it can be sent discretly inside a card. I know it sounds strange....but it means so much to them.

If you leave now, that would be one expensive hotel bill and they wouldn't let you see him anyways. I could be wrong, but I thought I read on here somewhere that recruit's family can come on base for Thanksgiving??? It would be expensive for such a short stay anyways. Did you read that? I don't know if you could go or not, but you could ask Purple Pig if you are interested. Maybe I have lost my mind, but I could have sworn I read that. How far is a drive for you? Do-able or not? Airline fares are "sky high" right now. I know you miss Zach, but picture him learning new things and feeling so "grown up" and full of pride! He will love your letters! I got my first letter from Jared like one and a half weeks in b/c as he was one of the first in his division. I'm dying to know what Zach's "job" is in BC. Be sure to ask him that. Jared was one of the very first in his division and so the first 7 are assigned to "head duty" cleaning the restrooms 3-4 times per day. They called them the "Lucky Seven"....not. UGH! He was fine with it though- what are you going to do, right?

Sue-I just thought of ONE good thing about your son being in the first two divisions.....when they start to do Battle Stations- your son's division along with his brother division (041) will get to go the very first night they start! This will be a big deal as your new PIR group (soon to be founded by you "PIR Jan. 8th group") will all be on your group site just WAITING for the "I'm a Sailor" calls. Some of the moms will have kids that go last and they don't get the call until they are in route to PIR so that would be nerve racking to HOPE your kid is actually graduating, flying there and not being sure. See....there is one upside to it. Also, we learned from Purple Pig that the divisions ALWAYS go in numerical order! In your letters, ask your son to list dates for his agenda so you can know when he is doing what....especially the Battle Stations date....VERY important for you know. That won't be for a while yet, but keep that in mind....I'll remind you closer to that time. My son was good about mapping it out for me like a list with dates and the event. Some moms had no idea when that was taking place.
