...it can be done with class maybe it doesn't seem like it is possible to do that, but in our case it was. The growing for me came in realizing it could be done. The joy now, is knowing God orchestrated it all better than I could have.
We spent the first 1/2 of time with our sailor and they got the rest. My sailor had fun with all I believe. There was a whole weekend to divide up! I never could have imagined this would happen. Boot camp shaped me as much as my son!

My boyfriends PIR is next week, does anyone have any input/advice as to when is a good time to get to the base before graduation, I know it says the gates don't open until 6:30AM, but I'm figuring there will be a line to get in, anyone have any advice as to when would be a good time to be waiting to get in. Like an hour before? 30 minutes?
And any advice on the PIR day in general? I don't want to miss anything or forget something, so any advice would be awesome :)

Wow! Can't believe it's already been two months since my son left for Boot Camp. I still cry every other day, missing my only child...(he'd get SOOOO upset if he knew! lol) I've waited all this time for him to graduate in anticipation of being able to see my 'baby' again, only to realize that even after graduation I won't have him home with me.. he'll still be on the other side of the United States.
Being a single mom, does it EVER get any easier to cope with?

Since I have been blogging about my experience as a Boot Camp mom, I am amazed at how this whole experience has felt like another momentous experience in my life. Let me take you back to a place, well before boot camp…actually just a couple of months shy of 19 years ago…
It was another damp November in Oregon and I had taken the day off to celebrate my 22nd birthday. I really, REALLY needed a day off. At 9 months pregnant and working in the local hospital’s medical records department, I was sic…

Waiting and waiting and waiting. It had been two weeks since I last spoke with my son. Finally a letter came and it was 4 pages long!! Little did I know what rollercoaster of emotions lie ahead..
I am sure all of you remember giving birth, diapering, toilet training, elementary school, middle school, sports and high school, but nothing really prepares you for the first time your boy pours his heart out to you over a girl. I know I have always been really involved in my kids’ lives and we talk a…

Well it seems like weeks since I contributed to this site. Thanks to all of you who have been checking in on me. I am fine, just no longer worried, no longer scared. And here’s the scoop why…
On the 29th, we got our first call from D. My husband and I were sitting in the living room chatting about how we were anxious to hear from D and that we were expecting mail on Thursday. Looking back on those moments it was sort of surreal to be talking about your child as if he was an adult, while still b…

Wow - is Great Lakes PIR interesting and exciting! We left the house before 6 am (only half-an-hour behind schedule LOL) and got to Great Lakes at 7. They inspect the vehicle, make you stand outside in a median and you can't even turn around to see what they're doing. It was pretty efficient though and we were parked and in the drill hall at 7:30am. Things have certainly changed since my brother graduated from boot camp in 23 years ago. Back then it was outside and about 98 degrees the day of hi…

Independence Grove Forest Preserve http://www.lcfpd.org/preserves/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.view&object_id=194
This park is on Buckley Rd (137) and about 10 mins from base. Parking is free with a military ID. It is a very big park with a nice beach. I'm sure you will enjoy visiting here with your sailor.
Here are some pics I took last time I was there.…

I have received this info from ombudsmen so I thought I'll pass it out to you all who will be visiting IL soon.
FYSA. Speed Cameras - For all who will be using the freeways of Illinois...
Illinois will begin using photo radar technology in freeway work zones beginning today. This new technology allows the state to take photos of the driver and auto (including license plate) in "Work Zones" and tie them to radar data for issuing citations. The consequences for exceeding work zone speeds will be…

MUST read this website top to bottom time and time again!! What they do at boot camp, how to send letters, when they get letters, phone call, contacting them in emergency, PIR (parking, seats, liberty, grad and go, cell phone).....etc, everything is there!!
Everyone who have a loved one about to go to boot camp, just went to boot camp or about to graduate should read especially this one.…

Hi everyone - I'm sorry I haven't been around since PIR - life has been even more of a whirlwind than normal with work, helping take care of my elderly mother in law etc. Kelly got to come home with us right after PIR and I enjoyed every minute of it. I saw so many wonderful changes in her - in her attitude and approach, a real maturity came about and I am so grateful to all of the wonderful people there at Great Lakes who helped with that [you know who you are!!!]. Kelly thought the world of he…

Because my husband captured it so perfectly, I'm going to copy a post he made to the Navy Parents site about our experience at PIR:
PIR Report
A lot of this will be old news to you folks with kids out in the fleet or at school, but I thought I’d report as if my audience was still going. That way I’ll pay back some of the help I’ve gotten over the last couple of months.
The weather in Chicago was terrible on Thursday, February 26th, so it was difficult to get there. We left Boise, Idaho…

Well, we got a quick phone call from Jay the Tuesday before Christmas... it was so nice to hear his voice!!! I nearly screwed up though... with this economy and my lack of work, I tend not to answer calls from numbers I don't recognize so, I missed his first call. Then I sat and willed him to call me back while I stared impatiently at the phone.
He called back, and he spoke a mile a minute! I've never heard my son speak that much, that quickly - EVER! I had to get him to stop and take a breath…

PIR was the happiest day for me! Having my son in my arms was the best Christmas gift I could have dreamed of.
The event itself was really awsome! It looked as if they worked for weeks just on it. I know that Joseph says they praticed only once but wow it didn't look that way.
I still remember how proud I was when I first spoted him in the ranks! I teared up. I wanted to just go right out then and hug him so tight. I didn't think it would ever be time for that. Then we they released them for lea…

Well, we are 2 1/2 weeks into bootcamp and I am still hanging on. I am hoping for another phone call this week and hopfully another letter tomorrow.
I miss my son, Joseph, but know that he's in good hands.
Looking forward and counting the days until PIR on Dec. 24th.
With all my love,

Okay, it's Friday now and everyone thought they would update the website for graduations by today, but so far no go :-( I really really need to know when Div 906 is graduating so that I can airline tickets, which is neither easy nor cheap from Alaska, especially at the last minute. This is so frustrating, because I see people who went into BC at the same time she did who's divisions are posted. I still have no form letter yet either. I'm hoping maybe Monday something will change. I miss her.

Well I got the call from Kelly's recruiter this morning [apparently stalking DOES work, LOL]. So now I finally have an address to send her mail to and I've already mailed out her first two letters [I'm sending them in batches of two since there is a backlog and since I don't want to get her in any trouble]. I also sent an email to all of our friends/family telling them that if they wanted to send an email for Kelly that I would print it out and send it with my letters. This worked great as they…
