Navy For Moms

A few weeks ago I posted a blog about the Gift Store Application potentially being removed. After being reviewed by the Navy, a decision has been made to move forward with removal.

The Navy can't accept money - nor were they- but they didn't want you to believe they were somehow making money off of N4M members. As we currently can't chose to only offer free gifts or control the cost of gifts that we create, we will be disabling this application until further notice.

In my previous posting, I mentioned that removal of the Gift Store will cause all current gifts to be deleted from the site including those that have already been purchased. We apologize for this inconvenience and hope that Ning offers more flexibility to customize the Gift Store in the future to and provide us the option of only offering free gifts to those that want to participate.

That is fine with me. Whatever keeps the Navy in good standing both in practice and principle.

I received one of the gifts and thought it was nice, but I understand the position the Navy is taking on this. I like that we can go on here without being bombarded with advertisement.

I will have to agree with the Jag for the site is a social networking network not a commercial enterprise.

I did get many of the ribbons that meant a lot to me from friends who knew I am having surgery on Monday. In the future if you do it again maybe they can all be 'free' so we can encourage our friends when they are going through rough times--just a thought.

As a brand new member of Navy for Moms, I was not sure how the gifts worked.--seemed complicated. That being said, we can always offer words of encouragement to each other as a gift; for example, hints about how to soften the blow of children missing at Christmas and other holidays; complimenting each other on our childrens' victories; sending birthday/anniversary greetings; sending inspirational or funny "Thoughts for the Day"; I would consider it a gift to be able to read a mom's blog about her son/daughter---sort of getting to know them personally and having others getting to know my Andrew in the same way. Sometimes, these kinds of "gifts" are the most valuable of all. Susan (aka Andrewsmom)

P'nt & Jam - That's what we would like to be able to offer. Just free gifts that members can send as encouragement if they chose. However, we have little control over this application at the moment as Ning, the company who hosts our site, created it and launched it in our community.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts on this!
