Navy For Moms

My daughter was sworn in last week. The 2 positions she wanted was Master of Arms or Hospital Corpsman and she was told they both were closed... She was offered something called Aviation ??? ( dealing with equipment for planes/helicopters etc.... ( a job that I feel wont be very useful if and when she ever left the navy) she was told there was only one of these positions and she better take it if she wanted it ... so she did. They also told her that most deployments are less than 3 months is that correct???

My son went in as an undesignated as his jobs were not open either. That has turned out to be the best decision he made. He has a wonderful job as an SK working with the chiefs and master chiefs. He really likes it and wants to secure the SK rating for good. He is stationed in Japan and loves it. Even if their jobs in the Navy are not what they want to do for life I believe that the Navy prepares them for anything, it gives them lots of life skills. Your daughter can also take college classes in something that she really wants to do. She will be fine in aviation and might really like it but as I understand it she can also change after a few years if she doesnt...I could be wrong about that but it seems like that is what was told to my son. Good luck to her.

There are many aviation rates. She'd likely be assigned to a squadron and they do out with the carriers quite often. I don't know why you think that wouldn't be a useful job skill, many civilian aviation mechanics are highly paid, and she'd be in line for government jobs on bases afterwards. My father was in aviation, and he was very well paid after the Navy, even has two types of retirement pay coming in now!

Sorry to tell you if she is working in Aviation she will probably be put on an Aircraft carrier. Their deployments are 6 months or sometimes a bit longer. My brother is on the Nimitz an Aircraft carrier and he has already been on one deployment that was 6 months. and that's the usual. I mean it could happen that she could get shore duty working on planes but that's highly unlikely. Is there any way you can find out the EXACT rate she will be?
