Im Thinking Of Joining The NAVY!!! HELP PLEASE (a little about me ;) )

Hello, my name is shannone, and I am 20 years old. I have always some what been interested in the navy but thought my family would not be supportive and pretty much just laugh at the idea of me joining. So after I graduated high school in 2007, I worked a couple different jobs and was going to try and go to college this year. I applied for this government free money for college called FAFSA, but they didn't approve me. If I go to college I either have to get other scholorships or grants or a loan. Now I currently work at a restaraunt as a hostess and let me tell you...BORING. With this economy I need a second job cause trying to live off a part-time pay check is not going to get me far right??? So this past month I have been doing a lot of thinking and thats when the navy popped in my head. I am so fascinated with all the ships and military stuff. I began getting books about the navy and talking to people at my work about the navy. One of my co-workers is in the airforce and she said she could see me doing the navy. She told me that I need to study for this test called the ASVAB, which I have been doing....
When I told my parents what my plans were. That Im interested in the navy, and of all the opportunities it has to offer...I got a reaction that I was not expecting...My parents are very supportive and so is my family ;) They are pushing me and are incouraging me to do this. I am interested in there photography program. So hopefully I score high enough for mass communications. I have prayed to God, asking if this is what im to do. I feel that he is leading me in this direction and once i join, if I like it I can make a career out of it :)
I am very scared though...I have never done something so brave before ;) But I have a deep and strong love for my country, AMERICA. It runs so deep in my blood lol. And this will be good for my future!! My college will be paid for, I get to experience new things, travel and see new places, and not only grow physically but mentally. So if your a woman or even a guy please tell me what it's like for you being in the navy...how was bootcamp and what happens after that.

Hi Navygirl ~

You might want to check out the groups called Deppers & Boot Camp. It's at the top of your page then do a search. You sound like you're a smart young lady with a real desire to serve and I wish you the best as you pursue your goals. I'm glad to hear that your family is supporting you too.

Sounds like you want to do this, just do it. I have a daughter who is 20 yrs old and has been at boot camp for one month. When my daughter joined - it was from one day to the next, a friend invited her to a meeting and she came home and said I'm joining the Navy. It was that fast, a week later the recruiter came to our home to tell us about the Navy she left two days later to meps. I will tell you one thing, my daughter thought the Navy was going to be easy!!! It's not its been very hard for my daughter, I have not spoken to my daughter on the phone since she left, but from what her letters say - its really hard, but she doing it. My daughter has always been active physically - she played basketball since she was 5 yrs old til she left for the Navy. My personal opionion the hard part is being away from home and all the helling - they break you down mentally. I received a letter from my daughter on Friday and she's doing better - she's even getting promoted to an E-3 which is hard to promote and it's only been 3 weeks. I recommend you do it, my daughter wanted to go out and see the world and continue her education - and now she will be able to do both and not have to worry financially. Just do it!!!!

I joined the Navy in 1982 when I knew I had no money for college. I became an Electronics Technician, and today, though I have been out of the Navy for many years, I still work as an Electronics Technician. See my page for some of what I do.

My daughter recently graduated from Boot Camp. She joined because she found herself in her mid-twenties in a major Midwest city, unemployed and with little marketable job skills and suddenly homeless. While she was in said Midwest city, she did volunteer work as a tornado chaser. in order to do this, she had to obtain a HAM radio license. She hooked up with some clever fellows and got a General Class license. This required that she learn some electronics. She was perfectly prepared to take her ASVAB. She has orders to Fire Controlman school soon.

In just a few short weeks, she went from the bleakest of prospects to a future so bright she's gotta wear shades.

The point here is that you to have a future with real prospects and a life of purpose within your grasp. It will not be easy. You will be tested physically, mentally and emotionally beyond what you belive your "limits" are. You will discover that your "limits" are much farther out than you ever believed. You will learn that you are capable of doing things that you never imagined that you could do. You will know that you are made of much sterner stuff than anyone ever gave you credit for.

On the other hand, should you decide that the Navy is not for you, then you have an indeterminate number of years working multiple part-time jobs for slave wages with no time to develop real marketable job skills, all the while trying to find purpose and meaning in your life.

You pick.

Hi Navy Girl...I think you are making an excellent choice. My son joined the Navy a year ago. Just like you he loves serving his country. He is now stationed in Japan and has seen more of the world than I ever will. He loves the Navy and wants to be career. I'm so happy your parents are supportive and encouraging you to do this. It sounds like you are doing it for all the right reasons. Joining the Navy was the best decision my son could have made for his future. Like some of the others have said it will be challenging and difficult at times...but the accomplishments you will feel and the pride you will have in yourself will amaze you! I think the Navy and America will be lucky to have you! Best of luck and keep us all posted.

You know what you need to do. Now, make up your mind and do it! It's for your future, and for your future children as well. Did you think of that? Think of the adventures that you will have to share with them and even their children. There's no better way to serve your country; so, come a'board and set your course. You will not be sorry ever for having chosen a way to advance your future, your future family's futures and your Nation. God bless you and keep you!

I've been in the Navy DEP program since last November and I leave for boot camp in 6 days. Just being in the DEP program has been a wonderful experience for me. I turn 25 next month. I've worked numerous part-time and full time jobs with hardly any benefits, crappy pay and co-workers with horrible work ethics. I went to the local community college and after 5 years between working, going to school and paying for tuition out of pocket, I got an Associate's degree.

My point being is I wanted better for myself. It was shortly after my 24th birthday that I realized that I was trapped in a "rat race". I didn't want to work paycheck to paycheck anymore. So I did a bit of research and found the Navy. I contacted a recruiter and the rest is history.

Although I'm only a few years older than you, I don't want to see you go down the same path I did. I worked my butt off and have very little to show for it. I believe the Navy is a wonderful choice. You get to travel, serve your country and get some education. I can't tell you much about boot camp because I'm not there yet but the DEP is a wonderful program that prepares you mentally and physically for boot camp. You get a little taste of the Navy.

I hope this helps and good luck on your journey.

Hooyah!!
