Navy For Moms

My daughter, (OPSEC), currently serving at The-Naval-Support-Facility-That-Must-Not-Be-Named as (OPSEC) Yeoman, was recently invited to attend a (OPSEC) seminar at the (OPSEC). YES, THE REAL ONE-AND-ONLY (OPSEC)!! She has made trips there before, but they were brief visits, usually just to deliver and pick up (OPSEC). This was an opportunity to mingle with the varsity team.

Most of the attendees of the seminar were senior civilian and career military professionals. Since the dress code was civilian business attire, it required a shopping trip to get her a civie business outfit so she could blend in. Not that it worked, because as a very young looking 23 year old, she looked like a high schooler among the seasoned pros. None the less, it was a great opportunity to network with officals in the (OPSEC) field working in the greater (OPSEC) area.

The Navy continues to open doors for my daughter that a few years ago were unimaginable. When she was sworn in at MEPS, the Lieutenant told her that as a Yeoman she would be getting a lot of 'face time' with officers. Who would have thought that five years later she would be getting face time with (OPSEC)?. Accelerate her life? The Navy as made her life go ballistic!

It is great to hear that your daughter is doing so well. My son was disqualified from AO due to no depth perception and thinks he will become a Yeoman. I would love to share with him the opportunities that he might have!!! This might help him a lot.

A little humor from "Our Navy" magazine, April 15, 1945........

So You Wanna Be a Yeoman?

'"....... A yeoman must be of keen intellect, ambitious worker, conscientious objector towards right or wrong, a brilliant conversationalist, a dramatic orator, an excellent mathematician, a handsome courier, and a genial personality. Very few of the specie of mankind can come up to these standards of perfection and, consequently, deteriorate into machinist mates (aviation and otherwise), quartermasters, ship's cooks, radiomen, and some even go so low as to become pharmacist's mates. ....... EVERYONE wants to become a yeoman but very few can make the grade. Those poor unfortunates who fall out along the roadside in their pitiful attempts to become successful usually tuck their tails carefully under their legs, sneak away into the bilges or some equally heinous hideaway and quietly, discontentedly and listlessly develop into snipes and the like. Why, son, certainly you want to become a yeoman a member of that grand and glorious fraternal association of key-tappers."

And most people think of YNs as paper-pushers....HA!! Little do they know.
