Wonderful! Sadly I just lost my dad on September 23rd, a massive stroke sent him off on his final deployment. I can't believe how much I miss him. Thank you for sharing your dad's photos.

I am so sorry for your loss, Paula. My dad passed on in July.

Wow... I took my dad's ballcaps out of his car yesterday... the WW2 Vet, the USS Mendocino, the CVN-74 and VFA-154 caps and took them home. Mom gave me the flag that draped his coffin and was presented to her by the Navy at his full military honors funeral at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery... she can't bear to look at it. And after the 21-gun salute and the playing of TAPS... just when I thought I was strong enough to hold it all together, my daughter gets up.. walks up to his coffin.. and salutes her grandfather. Lost it.

I would have lost it too. The ballcaps sound cool, I only have dad's retired Navy one.

We didn't have a burial, dad was cremated. But we did have a 21 gun salute and TAPS. I saluted the Chief who presented me with the flag, caught him off guard. We then did a white dove release, funny, because the birds were a bit spooked by the guns. Too bad the mortuary is on a busy street, it would have been beautiful in a cemetery. I have dad's flag and my grandfather's flag. We used my grand dad's flag at my brother's funeral, he was an Army vet, but my SIL didn't make the arrangements for his flag.

Good thing the birds weren't released BEFORE the gun salute... yikes! Sorry... couldn't help myself. :) Funny thing is, Dad had never been to Abraham Lincoln... I was there for my best friend's dad's commitment ceremony (he was cremated also) and I happened to mention to my dad how beautiful it was out there. Brought him a brochure and he said... "works for me! there's a great golf course right down the road!" He and my mom were going to go look at it about two weeks before his stroke but never got there.

Oh, we laughed about the birds too. The busy street was appropriate as he worked on the flight deck and had lost his hearing.

Dad's urn is next to mom's urn on the top of my bookshelf by my desk.

I think it was my Dad's funeral at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, in 1999 that planted the idea of joining the Navy into my daughter's mind. She was in awe of the all female rifle squad.

We've kept the memory of our hero alive by flying his funeral flag at M's duty stations and some historic locations he would have approved. In 2006, M raised it over the USS Arizona.

Witnessing the Arizona's destruction at Pearl Harbor was a pivotal moment in my Dad's life.

Here's to all our special Heros.

Thanks ladies for sharing your stories of your dad, my dad was also Navy, you would have thought he was a rear Admiral the way he ran his life...LOL And he was called up from reserves and worked as a storekeeper in MD, handing out uniforms to the WAVS (not sure if that is correct) during the Korean War.But all his life he was pro military, and we called him the Admiral! He was a great dad, miss him lots, he would have been so proud of my sailor, I am sure he would have told her how to do stuff Navy style. We were lucky to have great dads.
