Navy For Moms

Hi, like many others I have never blogged before. My son has been in Japan since October. We are extremely proud of him. He loves the Navy and has made the most of all of his experiences. When they travel to different ports he takes advantage of this and goes siteseeing and schedules tours. He posts the pictures of his travels on facebook. His most recent set of pictures showed a young man that has been working out daily and has a different body than when he left. He left home at 17 and is starting to show signs of maturation in his body and facial features. I am always so excited to see his pictures and the great things he is doing but I had to grasp that my son is growing up and I am not part of it. Dont get me wrong I am so excited for all he is doing and would not trade one day of the past year. This whole Navy experience has been so amazing for all of us. But it still catches my breath when I see the physical changes in him and know that the emotional ones are just as big. I know that the child I sent away a year ago wont be the one that comes home in Dec...but that is not bad....just different. My head and heart just need to catch up with the pictures I see. However, I couldnt be more excited that he is part of something bigger than himself and he loves the Navy. We are so proud of him! Val

You have such a great attitude- I hope I end up having one like it. I am still in the "weird" stage- this is day 3 for me. I can relate to you when you say that he is growing up and you are not a part of it- I am really feeling that right now. :-)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts- it helps all of us to read them. :-)

Val, Your posting brought tears to my eyes. I know exactly what you are talking about. Speaking from experience the Navy completely changes them. It has a way of changing them both mentally and physically for the better. I have sent two sons off to Naval boot camp and both times when they have returned home I am surprised by how much they have changed. They stand taller and prouder. Best wishes to your son and your family. Thanks for sharing your story : ).

Ditto Val! My son will be in the Navy for a year, come 5/29. He came home for the Holidays, and I saw a difference, but i can now hear and see the differences in his pictures, and inthe way that he talks. He has gained 36lbs in the Navy, and works out allofthe time. I miss him so very much, and still cry, but like you, I realize that this was the best mone that he made in his life. He was 18 when he left, and turned 20 in boot camp. Your son was 17! OMG, I would've cried too. You're right though, so good for them. He also empty nested me, and it was difficult for me to adjust, but I'm better now, too. Jake will be stationed in San Diego, so it's close to home. I can catch a 1 1'2 flight to see him. My prayers are with you!
