OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Profile Questions Changed - Please Update!

Hello N4M Members!

In order to get a better idea of who our members are and to help you find other members using the Advanced Search feature, we have made some adjustments to our member Profile Questions.

You’ll notice that some questions were removed and some were added. We’ve also made a few questions required and private. This is in reaction to some privacy concerns that were expressed and also to help us understand who is joining so we can improve the way the site works and what content we feature. We’ll be sharing our findings with all of you soon!

If you haven’t already, please go back and update your profile so you can participate! Also, if you have not entered your date of birth already, please make sure you update that as well. Some of the questions have privacy options so you can control what information shows up on your page. Just click on “Settings” and you’ll see all of the questions listed. Questions with the lock symbol next to them will be viewable only to you and I - members that visit your page will not be able to see your responses. We are working to have privacy options available for your answer to the Location question.

Remember that you can always set your profile to Private as well. Learn how here.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and I look forward to sharing what we find!

**Note: Some of you may experience difficulties with your html additions to your page (glitter graphics, music, etc.) as a result of these changes. You can cut and re-paste the code elsewhere in order for your page to format correctly when you make your updates. We apologize for any trouble this causes and did not anticipate it when we made the switch!

I was wondering about that question as well.

In regards to the race question - it's just for demographic information so we can get a better idea of the makeup of the members in the community. It's just further insight for us and clients - but we didn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable with it so we made it optional.

Birthday is required by Ning - not by us - but you do have different privacy options for that. No answers will show on your profile if they have the security symbol next to it. Race/Ethnicity is an optional question - again, just for demographic purposes. We won't be sharing individual data with anybody but we will share the general findings. Member data is only viewable by our team - it is not released to any other individuals or companies.

OPSEC is the reason why we removed the Child's Name question and also did not provide further options regarding training/location. We had a lot of members putting their sailor's last name in the field.

Hope this helps!

Also there is a way to adjust your Latest Activity feed. You can determine how many posts to show and what content. This link shows you how. This was not a change we had control over. It was an update from Ning as is the new Chat.

Hope this all helps!

Must we remove our sailor's name that is beside our own and if it's within the About Me section?
Comment by Navy for Moms Admin on March 9, 2009 at 9:40pm
Lake George Sue: The Navy is the client I am referring to. I should have made that clear in my original post.

Cheryl: There are a few new questions added. I can add in another option for those that have a child in bootcamp.

Karen: I'm a bit confused by your question. Sailors' last names should not be appearing anywhere on the site.

Cindy: I still have all of the old content on file so if you would like me to send you what you had in place for the question about your proudest moment, I can pass it along in a PM and you can add it to your "About Me" section.

Carol: Zip Code is how Ning sets up location related questions. I am working with them so we can provide various privacy options for this question as they already have set up for Birthday. Your actual zip code will not appear on your page, just your city/state. If this makes you uncomfortable you can make your profile private to only people you accept as friends until the privacy settings for that question change.

I thought I would have to remove my son's first name also off my profile page altogether.
