Navy For Moms

Good Day...its almost 1:00 in the morning in California on Saturday, July 25, 2009....
I want everyone to know that if your child is going to Camp Pendleton to do FMTB training..please tell them to not have alot of expensive stuff....in the last 2 weeks, while my son's division has been out on training he has had his truck broke into..they stole his Ipod, Iphone, Gps and his credit card. He locked his stuff in his truck because people have been stealing inside the barricks..laptops, etc. We are about 2 hours away from Camp Pendleton...so, he gets a new phone and nothing else...and on July 24, 2009 they just got back from the field about 5:00 p.m. after being gone all week..and someone broke into his locker stole his laptop, our gps system and his truck keys...took his truck for a joy ride and wrecked the passenger side of it....they also stole from most of everyone else there. So, these guys, hot, tired, hungry, dirty...the commander makes them sit outside of the barricks from 6:00 p.m. until well, they are still there...because the NCIS is doing an investigation...it was one of my son's buddies that asked him what happened to his truck...so, he calls home...we told him to go tell NCIS while they are there...and they told him..how do we know you didn't wreck your truck? understandable...but again...he was gone! and he didn't leave home this last weekend with a wrecked truck..and he has 4 other witnesses that were with him...so, please help me to understand how can this happen on a Marine Base? and especially if the barricks have 24 hour watch how can someone just walk out of the barricks with this much merchandise?
So, parents, please be warned and make sure your son or daughter keeps their stuff tightly locked away some where...it has been a hassle trying to get anything solved with the base police!

It is pretty obvious that some one on that base has sticky fingers. I don't get it either, how can some one be stealing on a base that is heavily guarded? The one good thing is your son's truck was returned and maybe NCIS can pull finger prints off of it to determined who took it for that joy ride. Which may lead them to the thief or thieves. I am sure NCIS and the base police will do all they can.
Keep us posted on how things are going.

Your son should also have his CO confirm to NCIS that he was not there during the time the truck was taken for a joy ride.

Theft in the military has always been a problem. They can get renter's insurance for the barracks I think. Just not sure which company carries it.

Let's hope the police catch the thieves before the guys do. A base is a small enough place, the identities will come out eventually.

well, my son made it home around 3:30 am this morning...and NCIS and his Chief told him to not even waste his time filling out a police report because he cannot prove that he didn't wreck his own truck or proof that it was stolen and wrecked some where on base....the damage is pretty heavy on the passenger side..confined to the bed of his truck...but none the less...he did not do it and I am angry that they will not even give him the time of day. Would not even look at it or check for finger prints. So, I searched on the base website for the commander. I did find his email address and I sent a nice long letter this morning. We will see if I get a response. Will keep you all updated

I hope that catch the low lifes that are stealing and if they are in the Military I hope they do time and also throw them out!, I sure wouldn't any of our sailors to trust a thief with their lives... this story makes me sick.,

Alittle more update....I guess there is 1 video camera in the barricks at it points at a back door or something...so, the guys that were on watch are the ones that are waiting for the next FMTB class to start. So, NCIS had all of them lined up against the wall and was questioning them 1 by 1 and they will pull the video tapes to try and put one and one together....my son is emotionally drained and in the last 2 weeks as lost over $2650.00 worth of personal merchandise. He just turned 18 years old and paid for all of this stuff his self. Not to metion this is his first vehicle he is paying for and his very first credit card. We are waiting for the fraud department to take care of the charges on his credit card still. So, a word of advice...make sure you are able to talk on behalf of your child like I am...I was able to stop and report his IPHONE stolen, and stop his credit card. I am also on his bank account so you can watch for any fradulent activity.

My daughter had her laptop stolen last week abord her ship. I understand how you feel. It is very frustrating that this happened and it seems that no one even care enough about it to do anything. She is getting the run around now just asking for a written report for the insurance company.

How common is theft in the Navy? Are the storage area in the racks safe?
