I think Adam should be done with his time off soon. Does that mean he will finally be on the boat? When is his first trip out to sea scheduled? I know he must be so anxious.
So, are you having a lot of people at your house for Thanksgiving? Does everyone get assigned something to make? I am getting so excited and now just a few more days to wait. My mother arrives Tuesday, Pete Wednesday and Allie and her husband on Thursday. She has a 10 year high school reunion on Friday so they are going to stay until Saturday morning. Pete and my mother are both going home on Monday morning. Now we have to get everything cleaned up around here before everyone arrives. We still haven't raked all our leaves but that is what we are going to work on until the gang arrives. Actually none of them will care but we like to get it done.
Pete is still sewing and has advanced to a tote bag and is trying to make some jeans. He finally broke down and bought a pattern but said reading the instructions was like trying to understand Chinese. I wish he was going to be home longer so I could give him some sewing lessons. This whole sewing thing really cracks me up.
Well, it is starting to warm up outside and the leaves are calling me. I just keep working on them and eventually I will get them done. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving together.
I am glad you had a good time when you visited New Hampshire and didn't see the snow. We hiked Mt. Ascutney also a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. We went up the long way and it turned out to be a pretty rugged hike. We have been doing a lot of hiking in the White Mountains lately and I really enjoy it. I like to get outside and work hard and get my heart beating. I am glad we can still do it until it gets too cold or there is snow or ice on the trails.
Adam is getting so close to his first trip on the boat. I am sure he will like it. Most of it is attitude anyway and since he has a good attitude, I am sure he will do well. It is nice he and his brother get the chance to get together occasionally.
For some reason Boyd and I think this girlfriend is different from any of the others ones Pete has had. For some reason, she is very "special". He bought a sewing machine on Craig's list and made her some flannel pants. I guess she really loves them. I sew all the time so he feels he can make anything without a pattern or lessons. Apparently he did fine on the pants, he said he made himself a pair also. I asked him what his next project is.
Well, I hope you are feeling well and getting ready for the winter.
So, did you come to New Hampshire last week-end and see our snow? Fortunately it didn't stick. We get in a big rush to get ready for winter when we get early snow like that. So, we washed and waxed our cars and cut and split wood and now it is nice again. It was so warm, we were under attack by the lady bugs. We have some painters here painting the outside of our barn so it is nice that they have the nice weather to finish to job.
It is hard to believe that in another week or so all of Adam's formal training will be done. Then when he gets on the boat he has to qualify and earn his dolphins. They flew Pete to meet his boat when he got on for the first time. Any chance they will do that for Adam? I am sure he is very anxious to actually get on the boat. Nice he got all moved in and pictures hung in his apartment. I guess they really do grow up and not need us so much.
Pete called and told me that he and his new girlfriend will both spend Thanksgiving with us. So, that means we all will be here. I am really looking forward to it. He seems pretty serious about this girl but they haven't known each other very long so who knows?
Happy belated birthday to you and Eddie. Hope you are doing well.
Did you get to see Adam's apartment? How is it? Does he have any roommates? I know what you mean about the curtains and the wrong colors. I am impressed that he even got them hung.
We are developing the code about when the boat is coming or going. Pete will call and say they are leaving a month after his sister's birthday or something like that. As far as I know he always seems to know ahead of time how many days they will be gone. He tells us that ahead of time and then we can usually figure out when they will be back. Of course, sometimes plans change and I check with his friends to see if anyone has heard from him. Things may be different on a boomer because they are gone longer and they go into port during the trip.
Pete called to tell me he is coming home for Thanksgiving and his new girlfriend who lives in New Hampshire will be able to join us. I am excited about that. Now we will all get to meet her. You think you are a picky eater, she is a raw vegan so I will have to do some thinking to at least fix a couple of things that she will like. Actually I love the challenge.
Well, I have spent the day ripping out my garden since we got our first frost last night. I am a little sore from all the roto-tilling and digging. Nothing that a glass of wine and a good night's sleep won't cure.
Did you come up here over the week-end? Sunday turned out to be pretty nice. We went up north today to go hiking in the mountains and there is still plenty of beautiful foliage. If you come up on the 17th, I don't think it will all be gone. Everything just looks so beautiful this time of year.
While Pete was home for his friend's wedding one of his other friends got him to start going to yoga. He really loved it! He got friendly with the yoga instructor and on the last day he was here she asked him if he wanted to go blueberry picking. He liked her but said sorry, I am going back to WA today. Since that time they have been emailing and talking and texting and last week she flew to WA to visit him. They both had the week off and they had a wonderful time. VERY INTERESTING! I can't wait to meet her. She went hiking with him and they went fishing and toured Seattle. Now I am really hoping he makes it home for Thanksgiving because then I am sure he will bring her to meet us.
It is so nice that Adam and his brother get together and go fishing. He is finally approaching his first sea tour. Then the big deal will be to get qualified. When is he finished at Sobic?
It is hard to believe Adam is about to get settled in his apt with his assignment after all this time. They know the schedule for their boat way in advance unless something changes. He boat may be different until it has all the repairs completed. The thing is you have to see them in person to get the schedule because they can't tell you over the phone or by email. I think Pete goes out again some time in January for a few months. Of course it is different with a fast attack sub because there is only one crew and they are gone for longer periods of time.
Pete called a couple of days ago to tell us that he cut his head wakeboarding and needed 7 stitches but he is just fine. I feel so much safer when he is out to sea. He has been doing some serious hiking and really loves it. He usually tells us all about his journeys and sends us pictures of him on top of mountains.
We were north a little yesterday hiking and the foilage is just starting to get nice. The first week in October should be beautiful. Next week-end is the Deerfield Fair and it seems like half the world descends on this area then.
Well, I am hoping to see all my family for Thanksgiving but I don't know if Pete will get the time off or not. My daughter and her husband are driving up from NYC and my mother is coming from CA so that will be great. That is my favorite holiday anyway.
Enjoy this beautiful fall and we'll talk soon.
Take care,
Lynn
Has Adam started moving into his apartment already? I didn't know they had t have it approved? It must be so much easier not to have to make a long trip to move all his stuff. So what is up with Michelle?
We have been busy since this nice cool weather came along. It is much more fun to go hiking or cycling when it is like this. We went to another wedding and that was a lot of fun. It was small and not too extravagant, just the way I like them.
I hope your end of the summer party went well. I always think of doing that but then when I figure out how much work it is, I can easily talk myself out of it. Well, we have been playing the last few days so I have to get some things done today. Talk to you soon.
It sounds like Adam is going to get to come home pretty often now. That is great that Andrew got a job! I hope he likes it. Now that summer is officially over, we have to start thinking about all our fall activities like cutting wood and getting ready for winter. We are in the process of putting new siding on our barn and that is a pretty big job. The old stuff was starting to fall apart and it didn't make sense to paint it another time. We are so accustomed to our little routine, it will be nice when this job is completed.
Our daughter went to "survival camp" in Maine over the week-end and stopped and had dinner with us on the way home. It was good to see her. It seems funny for someone living in New York City to go to survival camp but she liked it. I think she really does enjoy getting back out in the woods once in a while.
I got an email from Pete today and he is hiking and it sounds like he is happy. He started going to yoga and he really enjoys that. He is determined to get strong and in good physical shape. I guess that can't hurt him. Well, time for me to start thinking about dinner. I caught a trout this morning so we will certainly have that for dinner tonight. My garden looks pretty tired and a lot of things are starting to die off.
I see you found some Toledo moms. That is nice when they are underway and you can share information with each other. I hope you had a good week-end at the Common Man. I love that restaurant. It was pretty nice except for Saturday and the huge storm.
Pete goes back to WA today and it was great to see him. The wedding was last Friday and it was very nice. It was fun to see all his friends all dressed up instead of ready for fishing. It is hard to believe they are really growing up and becoming responsible.
Last Tuesday was our anniversary and we always try to go hiking on that day so we climbed Sandwich Mountain and Pete went with us. That was a lot of fun. We went pretty slow for him but he was a good sport.
Last Friday we saw a bald eagle flying around our pond! What a big beautiful bird. I sure hope it comes back. We saw it a couple of days and then there was a troop of boy scouts camping here so they may have scared him off.
Hi Kathy. My son has been with the Toledo for over a year. I'm not here on the N4M site much anymore...I'm back at work, which keeps me VERY busy. Send me a PM anytime you wish!!
Welcome, Kathy! Your son is now a part of the Toledo family. That's great. My sailor is part of the enlisted crew and has been assigned to the Toledo since March. Living in California puts us far away from him. I have entered this Navy journey with lots of faith and much prayer. Thank goodness, I am getting used to the long silences and little communication. I do hope your officer enjoys his duties. Welcome! x0x0 mom stew
So Adam finally got his orders, the Toledo. Is that a boomer or a fast attack sub? How does he feel about it? Is he happy to be in Groton? I wouldn't worry about any mechanical or structural problems. The Navy is very cautious, they are not going to let anything happen to our sons. So, he graduated 1st in his class! Good for him. He is competing with a lot of other very smart guys. You should be very proud!!
At SOBIC they just live in a hotel so there isn't a lot of packing and moving to do. They just have to store all their stuff while they are there. If he is going to be stationed in Groton, that should give him plenty of time to find a good place to live. Well, I am sure he is happy ti finally know where he is going.
How do you like this heat? It doesn't usually bother me but I have been working in the garden and now I am just hot! Pete got home a few days ago and we have been able to spend a little time with hem. He seems to be doing well. Next week, during the week while all his friends are at work, he will probably get more of a chance to spend time with him.
Now, I am hot and going to go swimming so I don't get too grumpy. You must be happy to have your son close to home.
How are you doing? I can't believe they still haven't given Adam his orders. Oh well, he will certainly find out where he is going soon. At least he doesn't have a wife and a bunch of kids to move and get settled in a new area.
It finally feels like summer and it is a beautiful day. We are invited to a pig roast this evening so that should be fun. I can't believe Pete will be home in just another two weeks. It will be so good to see him. He is even thinking of taking a trip to NYC to visit his sister. I have a feeling that when he starts visiting with his friends and fishing and hiking, he may skip the New York trip. We'll see.
My daughter seems to be doing very well. Even though she lives in the city she seems to get out frequently and go camping or someplace in upstate New York. In a couple of weeks she is going to some survival camp in Maine with a friend. She is going to stop and spend the night with us on the way home so then we will hear all about it. It makes me laugh because she wants to live in the city but she gets all excited about sitting around the camp fire and sleeping outside.
Well, I have to work a few hours at the library today and then the next few days are mine. I just hope the rain holds off and we continue to get to see all this nice sun.
Good news! Pete called on Monday and he was back and he got his dolphins. He said it was a busy trip and he sounded tired but everything went fine. He plans to take 10 days off when he comes home in August so I should get a chance to see him quite a bit. I am really looking forward to that.
You are right, now it really feels like summer and the garden is growing strong. I have to pick broccoli every couple of days and I am finally starting to get some tomatoes. My friend has been bringing us fresh blueberries every couple of days and they are sure good. I love all this fresh food.
I am sure Adam is getting anxious but it sounds like he is close to the end of prototype. Even though he doesn't get a long break, that means he will just get to his boat sooner.
Well, no more big trips for us the rest of this summer. We have some repair and painting projects to do and hopefully it will stop raining long enough to get them done.
Take care,
Lynn
I am back home and even though it is raining again, it is good to be home. So. California has a lot of people and a lot of noise compared to what I am used to. I enjoyed seeing my sister for a few days and one of my good friends from high school stayed at my sister's house also. It was a lot of fun. My sister and I rarely get time alone because usually the whole family is around the few time we get together.
I still have not heard from Pete even though I expected him back over a week ago. I know he will call me when he gets home. I also know if something bad happened, I would get the news so I am not worried. It would just be nice to hear his voice and know that he is back safe and sound. He will be coming home the end of August for his friend's wedding. He was not sure how much time he would be able to get off.
Adam must be getting to the end of prototype. Does he still think he will be able to get into the SOBIC class in Groton that starts the middle of August? I am sure you will enjoy having him so close to home for the 10 weeks or so that it lasts. Did you ever find out what is up with him and Michelle?
Well, I am afraid summer will be over soon and we will never know that it was here. My garden is doing okay but still pretty slow. Accuweather is predicting a very snowy winter for us. I like that but I know there are a lot of people who are not thrilled with that news.
Take care and try to stay dry,
Lynn
I hope you got a chance to talk to Adam and spend some time with him before he went back. Does he have a date when he will finish prototype? There is no graduation ceremony, they are just done and then they leave.
We finally have some warm weather and it is starting to feel like summer. I am leaving Thursday morning to go to So. California to stay with my sister and go to my 40th high school reunion. It should be fun. Boyd is staying home so I can spend some time with my girlfriends. It is like going to another planet after being out in the woods of New Hampshire. I am sure I will have a good time.
We have not heard from Pete since the one email we got some time ago. I think he should be coming back in the next couple of weeks but of course I do not know for sure. He will call us when he gets back. I know he will be very disappointed if he didn't get his dolphins on this trip.
I am getting lots of broccoli and peas out of my garden and it sure tastes good. I hope the summer is long enough that I will get melons and corn and all the other things I grow. I have to get everything weeded and watered so it won't be a mess when I get back next Monday.
Well, hope you are finally getting to enjoy some summer.
Take care,
Lynn
I won't even mention that it is still raining. We did have a couple of nice days last week-end so I am not complaining too much. I looked at the schedule of events in Boston for Navy week and it looked like fun but like you said, I figured there would be lots of people. We just had a barbecue with some friends here.
Adam should be home in a couple of days and I am sure you are looking forward to that. It sounds like he is getting to the end of prototype. I am sure he will be very glad when that is done. When he comes home I am sure you will find out what is going on with Michelle.
There are so many people looking for work, I feel bad for the families with kids and big mortgages. Maybe this will teach all of them to plan for the future and not just spend whatever you are making today. Anyway, I feel bad for them.
Well, my garden is limping along and I certainly haven't had to water my flowers. Hope you are doing well.
Take care,
Lynn
It is raining here all the time now. First the rain messed up bike week and now there is a big NASCAR race this week-end. We are all getting pretty sick of the rain.
It is good to hear that you are busy at work. I consider that a good sign. There is so much unemployment and so many businesses closing that you are in a good position. I will feel better when the economy improves and all these poor young kids can get jobs and be able to buy houses.
It is funny that you mentioned the Glass Castle as one of your favorite books. It gets checked out a lot so I decided to read it and I had just checked it out when I got your message. I am about half-way through it now. At least I know the author will end up in a better situation. I also just read "The Help" which I really enjoyed.
I got an email from Pete and he sounded great. He hasn't earned his dolphins yet but he is getting very close. He said they have an inspection coming and the higher ranking officers are getting ready for the inspection and don't have the time to sign off on the last of his qualifications. But, he is sure it will happen soon.
Do you have any plans for the July 4th week-end? How did your visit with your sister go? It must be nice to have family close for holidays like that. You can tell Adam we caught a 5 pound trout in our pond and they are just getting bigger and bigger all the time.
Sounds like you and Eddie had a good time on your bike trip. Unfortunately he is getting plenty of rain for bike week so it is probably a good thing you stayed home. They are predicting four days of rain for us.
I have been watching the news and there is so much talk of N. Korea and their nuclear weapons. I know the US Navy has the situation under control. Of course I have no idea where Pete is but I wonder if he knows the situation and what they are doing about it. I watched a YouTube video on US Submarines yesterday and it still amazes me that these men can stay in those boats and run them and do all the things they have to. I am sure Adam will love it when he gets to that point. If he stays mellow and goes with the flow now, he will be fine when he finally gets out on a boat.
The head librarian has started letting me do some of the book ordering at the library and it is so frustrating because I get to order all the books that I think look good but then I don't have time to read all of them. It is a lot of fun and more interesting than just checking the books in and out.
Well, it is time for me to call it a day and read my latest book. Hope you are doing well.
I hope you enjoyed your week-end "get-away". It sounds like a good time. Graduation was really wonderful and it didn't even rain on us. It was a long day but certainly worth it. I have not seen my daughter so radiant in a long time. Just to have all the stress of school over with is a huge treat. My mother enjoyed it and got home just fine.
Pete called me and said he was starting up the reactor and they were leaving soon and I was not sure if soon meant a few hours or a few days but they are definitely gone now. I think they will be back about the middle of July. I sent him some pictures of graduation but I don't know if he saw them before he left. He is very proud of his sister also. So what is the most recent timetable for Adam. When is he expected to be finished with prototype? Then he goes to SOBIC and that does not take very long and there are not usually and hang-ups since there is not any equipment involved.
Hope everything is going well for you.
Take care,
Lynn

Next week, during the week while all his friends are at work, he will probably get more of a chance to spend time with him.
Now, I am hot and going to go swimming so I don't get too grumpy. You must be happy to have your son close to home.
Take care,
Lynn
Take care, Lynn
I hope you are doing well.
Take care,
Lynn
Take Care,
Lynn
Take care,
Lynn
