Hi Pat,
Thank you for the welcome. It is my hope that this website will provide answers to questions that my son has not been able to answer.
We made it through basic, I enjoyed his letters and looked forward to them each week.
Now that he is in A school, training to be a submarine mechanics mate we do get to talk on the phone quite often. However, we are not sure of the rules concerning leave, how to acquire it, is there any during school time. I know he has liberties, but don't know what that means as far as planning goes to make a trip to see him. Or to plan a trip home.
Hi Pat, thanks for the warm welcome! This site, geesh, I wish I had found it while my son was going through basic! Since the communication was via letter writing, he never answered my questions....although in his defense, I really did not know what questions to ask! LOL My son just graduated this weekend and is headed to Pensacola for A-School on Wednesday. He is AO if that tells you which base he will be on. I have no clue! I am trying to decide whether to fly in or drive from NC, and I am leaning towards flying because that is a long drive alone. Are there restaurants nearby to walk to or would a rental car be necessary? That is, assuming that the small airport has an airport shuttle to get me to Navy Lodge? I have learned not to assume anything! Our airport here is really small too, but we do have airport transportation. And to Carolyn below, I just went through graduation this weekend, so wanted to offer what happened to us. He did not write to us about if he had duty or not on graduation weekend. He had to be back on base on Friday night at 7PM (graduation was Friday morning), but other than that, he was on liberty. Because we did not know that, my daughter and I had booked a flight back to NC for Saturday afternoon. His father and stepmother drove in from NC and also decided to return home on Saturday afternoon. That left him with no family to be with for about 6 hours on Saturday. He was upset and wanted me and his sister to stay one more night, but to change return flight plans was cost prohibitive for us. I was surprised at how much he openly loved seeing us. You know, being a young man and somewhat cocky before he went in! I would say to definitely book a room for Saturday night too, as most of the families did not leave till Sunday. Also, if you can find a hotel that provides a shuttle to the ceremony, do that. We were able to get right in and avoid the car search. We stayed at Comfort Inn which had a free shuttle. There was no pool, and its kind of bare bones, but ok. A common theme I discovered from talking to other moms is that one thing our kids really want to do is take a nice shower in your room without being rushed. That is a luxury for them. My son was really not interested in "doing" anything so much as just sitting around talking. Again, thanks so much for the warm welcome, and know how much I appreciate your valuable service here!
Good Morning Pat,
My son, Jeff, has been in the Seabees for 23 years. He is a Senior Chief and I have been very proud of him for his accomplishments over the years. If I can be of any help to "new" Navy Mom's. That is my goal.
Thank you Pat for right now I don't know what my son is doing I haven't been able to contact him because he is on demerits for trying to contact home and knowing he's not supposed to do so. It's kind of funny, but I do know he is in Chicago and will be graduating in September which his step-father and I will be attending. I am very proud of him.
Hi Pat, thank you for your message. My son is a corpsman stationed at the Fallon Naval Air Station in Nevada. I am so proud of him for what he is doing and I miss him very much. This looks like a wonderful website. Thank you for making me feel welcome here. :)
Pat - thanks for the welcome post. My daughter will be going to San Antonio after PIR on August 7; she'll be in the Master At Arms school. My biggest concern for the short term is that she makes it out of San Antonio (a.k.a. Sodom and Gomorra) relatively intact, not married, not pregnant. I was at Ft. Sam Houston years ago and those who have been in the area lately say it has only become worse. Just what a mom wants to hear. I was pretty direct with her about all of it, so hopefully she'll keep things in mind.
I do have a question - how much time to we actually get to spend with her during that weekend after graduation? We're trying to decide whether to look for a hotel room until Sunday so we can make the most of our time, or we should get back on the road Saturday. Any ideas on that?
thanks again for the welcome, I'm looking up your group...
Carolyn
Hi, how are you doing? Thanks, I think he is pretty handsome, he takes after his father.lol Yes, I finally have Stephen's computer, so now we have to get it to Best Buy. We were in MI last week for the whole week, it was a working vacation, I am glad to be home to rest.lol Yes, I have not seem my boy in weeks cannot wait to get this computer fixed and sent back to him. But he has a phone now so we do talk a little, he was missing home really bad a few weeks ago, I felt so bad, so I packed up a box and sent it to him, some movies, goodies and a picture of the four of us to make him feel at home. He told me without skype he felt out of touch, my heart broke for him so I have to get that computer back to him, but he is feeling better now, I am glad. He is very busy, the Navy is requesting him to take some classes, all the new guys and after their are done the rest of them will take them. He also put in the teach CPR, he was a fireman before the Navy, so he is hoping to be picked to teach that class. His friend bought a car so they have been getting around a little better, the other base has more things to do over there so now they can get over there. Boy I miss him!!!!! How is your daughter doing? Are you ok? Hope to talk with you soon.
Hi Pat, thank you for welcoming me, you caught me on a day when I am missing my son alot. He in stationed in California in the middle of an onion field so he says, he was made many promises by the men who enlisted him only to find that what he was looking for hasn't happened yet. My son loads bombs and inspects the aircrafts, he would one day like to do airline mechanics although I want more for him. My son is a dreamer and a follower, wants to be everything for everyone and do everything for everyone, it is a scary thought. He as many of our sons and daughters are so young and confused and eager to please, it scares me to find out what is happening next. Thankyou for letting me vent
my son is a machinist mate. he has been sent to his base but they may change is sub. thank you for giving me someone to talk to to ask questions. no one around me has a child in the navy. just one person with a son in the marines and a daughter in the marines reserve and he comes home every day, so its hard to find someone who knows what im going through.
Pat I saw your comment about someone making a racist remark about your daughter. Who was it? I think they should be called out and made to apologize. Thats as disgusting as the remarks made about my son and the way I raised him, but I never got an apology.
