I know my brother still needs to get through boot camp and A School first, but I was wondering what happens after that? He is supposed to be a groomsman in my destination wedding in October, which is conveniently pretty much right next to NAS Pensacola, within 10 miles. I have a slim glimmer of hope he could get stationed there which would really help with travel!

He's going for Hull Technician, I know if he was going for something more air-based he would get sent to Pensacola, but for this one I have no idea. I do know his A School is in Great Lakes though.

Yeah, a Naval Air Station is not going to be happening for an HT.  He'll get orders to where the ships are, San Diego, WA, Norfolk, maybe overseas.  He gets leave right after A school, for a week or two, but once he gets to his new command, chances are very slim he will get to take more leave.  He'll be busy with his quals, and perhaps deployed.  Unless your wedding falls just right, I'd not count on him attending.  It isn't impossible, but very improbable.

They earn 2.5 days of leave each month, beginning from day one of boot camp.  Usually the week after A school burns whatever they've earned.   His seat days for school/s are 73, but he'll also have indoc for a few days, and could be on hold waiting to class up or for orders after. Always expect a longer time in Great Lakes than the given calender days.  Always.   He may have a C school also, so he might not be able to take leave until that is completed.

Is he in boot camp already?  When is his PIR?  That would give us some type of date to figure from.  Loosely.

Every command, including training commands, have "liberty limits".  Liberty is normal time off such as weekends and holidays when the sailor does not have duty.  For Great Lakes, it is 300 miles.  They can't travel any farther  than that without taking leave, although sometimes they can get a special request chit approved for "out of bounds" travel approved while on liberty.

I know this is a lot of not so good news, but hang in there, you never know what can happen.  Congratulations, and I hope it is a lovely day and a happy, successful marriage.

Thank you so much for all the detailed information! His PIR date is scheduled for 5/25, so approximately 73 days from then puts him in the first week of August for wrapping up A School if I counted it right. It does sound like a lot of not so good news, but I wanted to have realistic expectations that way I don't get my hopes up. Now I just know that I'll need to make sure I get someone to record the ceremony! I will also make sure that I have a note in our program for him not being able to attend due to serving our country :)

Thank you for your well wishes and also for the information that he will need to take leave to travel further than 300 miles (our entire family lives more than 300 miles out from Great Lakes, but at least I'm only 399!)

As the wedding approaches, there is a chance he can take a long weekend, either leave or liberty with out of bounds permission.  He may also be able to "attend" via Skype, so look into that when you know where he will be.  I'd suggest having him record a toast to play at the reception (everyone will cry, I promise!)  The key is to stay flexible, be creative, and have more than one plan to include him in someway.  Heck, get a good photo of him to sit with family, or a cardboard cut out to stand in!

I seriously mentioned to him when he was talking about his plans to enlist, that I will get a giant cardboard cutout made of him if he can't make it! I like the Skype idea if he's able to have his laptop with him, or access to one. Thanks again for all the awesome suggestions!

Those 73 days are instruction days (seat days), not including weekends or federal holidays.  Add on another month, plus about five more days for indoc.  The big unknown is if he will "class up" right away, or need to wait for other potential HTs to finish boot camp.  even the self-paced courses tend to go through as groups on a schedule. He may well end up on leave the week you need him!

Oh that would be perfect! Still trying not to get my hopes up though :)

My daughter just had PIR in Great Lakes and is now in A School at Ft. Meade. She told me it will be mid-November before she finishes. Long time, and I am sorry your brother will miss your wedding. I'm wrapping my head around not seeing her for a long time. We'll keep in touch in other ways. Best wishes.

Just got back from PIR in Great Lakes yesterday. Seeing him was absolutely amazing. Thankfully I'm now at the point where if he can't make it, he can't make it, since these things are out of our control now. I know his heart will be there and he will do whatever it takes to make it.
