Hi Moms, I need some help. I just got a DMV Drivers Lic. renewal for my son Sam. It says he has to renew his Drivers Lic. (take a writen test, finger print, and new photo) but he won't be home before his lic. expires. He will still be in A-school in GL. Does anyone know what I should do? I called DMV, they said he is over 18 and I have no authority!!!!
Thank you for the help. I don't think you can renew a CA. lic out of state? The only thing DMV told me is the military has there own rules regarding driving on base. Maybe he doesn't need to renew until he gets his base assignment and renew in that state, but his lic will be expired by then.
Dont panic mom. I would write to your son, tell him that his first priority of business when he arrives at Great Lakes is to inform his Commanding Officer that his license will expire and where can he go to renew. If you are seeing him take with you the paperwork from the DMV office as he will need that for the renewal process. Then as he is an adult it will be up to him and the Navy to get the process going on the renewal.
Thanks, I'm trying not to panic, all this stuff is new to me, and I feel so lost in the process. I will bring the renewal to PIR may 30th. Thats a good ideal, and I will write Sam to check with his CO about what to do. Thanks again.
good luck...you know I am surprised that the DMV wouldn't do -something- I know when my son was in BC...his cell phone company, insurance company etc. worked with him they have programs. I bet you could call his recruiter she will have info. if you want more.

I think all states are different. In MO, if you are in the military, you can renew your license by mail. Maybe check the DMV website, you might get more information than by calling an office.
Even if he gets an Illinois DL while in A School, it should be accepted anywhere in continental USA. Then when he gets to a ship he can change if he wants. In KS, I was told that he has 1 year after expiration to renew with a very slight $$ penalty. All he has to show is his military ID and just take the test. When I was in GL in February for a Phase 3 visit with sailor we stayed at the Comfort Inn and a DL office was right next door and open on Saturday. Somewhere on Green Bay Road I believe.
California Resident Driver's License
If you hold a California driver's license and are stationed outside of the state, you will not be required to renew your license when it expires. According to California law, as long as you call the California DMV at (800) 777-0133 and update your record, you'll be issued a DL 236 card to carry with your California driver's license. This card shows that your license is still valid under California law.
When You Return to California
Once you return, you will need to make an appointment with your local DMV to renew your driver's license. You'll have a bit of a time cushion to do so―your current license will be valid for 30 days once you return to the state.
Be sure to carry all documentation, including discharge papers (if any), with you while you are waiting for your DMV appointment
OMG----Thank you, I will take this with me to Sam's PIR on the 30th and have him make that call. I knew we had a great team of N4M's. Thanks for the info and link! God Bless you & your Sailor!!!
