Specific Health/Nutrition Questions . . .

I thought I'd start this thread as a place to ask specific questions so they're all in one place for anyone to find (instead of tucked away here or there) . . .
such as: I'm lactose intolerant - how can I get enough calcium? Kathy answered - broccoli and kale are the best sources.

Question about limitations. Almost all of us have some limitation somewhere - so we adapt the workout. If it is in your legs then do more upper body strength - if it is upper body - then do some more lower body strenghening.

The key is build some lean muscle mass and offer the body some resistance. Resistance is the best prevention from osteoperosis there is. So do what you know you can. Push ups against a wall or tree instead of on the ground. See what I mean.

I'm glad I can use the wall - 'cause (unlike my son) I sure can't do pushups with one arm - LOL:)!

Me either LOL - can you imagine the laughing that would be going on if we were trying :)

For me - it is the very best medicine.

OK - I love this thread - with so much diabetes in my family - healthy eating has always been an issue.
I lost weight last summer by only eating 60 carbs a day - nothing white and nothing fried.
Fruit has lots of carbs - which ones are best to limit the number of carbs and also eat the fruit?
Also, what about liquid fruit drinks. V-8, etc. any of these any good?

Hi Brenda - I think a good place for you to look for a good healthy eating lifestyle would be on Dr. David Katz's website. His book is there as well. Not only is he America's wellness guru, Yale Universities Wellness Coordinator, he is also doing research at Yale with the whole food company I work with. So his food plans are really good. Let me know if you want more information about him.

Look for fruit juices that have no high fructose corn syrup and other added sugar. Dole has some. V8 is good but check for HFCS there as well. It goes straight to storage.

I will post a Tip about carbs on the other discussion.

I have a question about iron. The dr says it is ok, but the united blood service says I can't give cause it is to low. I lost the paper with the numbers on it. I only dontate through United, and only when they call and for the last four months have been denied. I eat a pretty balanced diet, many many veggies, fresh and home prepped fruit, I rarely buy meat in a store, we either raise, farm buy or hunt our own. I eat some red meat once in a while, we do cook with wild animal organs a couple of times a month. I avoid sugar and sugar substitues most of the time. And drink an occasional glass of wine. Oh, take a multi vitiamin once a day too.

We just don't get the same nutrients from our food as we used to which is one of the reasons that the requirements has moved from 5-9 a daily of fruits and veggies to 9-13 servings of fruits and veggies. We get a lot of iron from the plant kingdom as well as the meat. I also don't eat much meat - and non-processed in the store manner. You are eating the right kind of meat. Look for veggies that are high in iron. Beets and concord grapes are very high in iron. And remember - synergistically working together with the other 10,000 nutrients in each fruit and veggie - they are more powerful in the body than any multivitamin you may take. Hope this helps.

I used to donate blood all the time, then a couple of years ago they changed the way they took the sample. Since then I've been told I can't give, that I'm borderline anemic. If I eat Cream of Wheat a couple of times a week, that 'bumps me up' enough to be able to donate. And I LIKE Cream of Wheat so I guess it's all good:)!
