Navy For Moms

My son had PIR this past Fri(april25th). Besides the beautiful ceremony and friends" i made and miss, I have to tell you some PUBLIC reaction to my new sailor. He was grad n go fro GL and we got to Ohare ahead of him to check in. We were waiting for his arrival outside the Delta check-in and time was geting late, I was getting nervous wondering where he was. As we watched for him , i heard a loud clapping and some cheering comming from way down the hallway. As a group of sailors neared, i SAW my son and watched as ppl shook his hand and said "thankyou" to the 5 young men fresh from Bootcamp grad! I just cryed, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of pride. Justin stood so tall with THE biggest smile on his face. It was astounding to watch! After leaving Georgia, he was given 40 min to change flights to connect from Georgia to Gulfport. He did NOT make his connection. The Delta airlines were so kind, helped him get a room , gave him free transport there and back in the morn(*8:30 flight out to MS) and again he said ALOT of ppl shook his hand and asked about his military experiences. At the Holiday INN, the front desk clerk told him"Military?...I will upgrade you to our best room at no extra cost".........and then gave him a "military 15% discount. Thankyou all who helped make this adventure a GREAT one! GOD BLESS OUR USA!

My sailor doesn't like to wear his whites or blues home unless he has to as he was always told during bc that they draw attention and some of it might not be welcome. Makes them targets even in their own country. I know when they leave GL, he wore them as he was still on base but changed out of them at the airport. He also didn't want to get them dirty as he has become so particular about them. I never thought he would think about such an idea. He just told me that he had to pay for his own trip from A school to C school and then on to his ship so he is really watching his $$. He has to go through the travel agency on base.

i heard if they have to pay their own way home from A SCHOOL, or to their C school that they are rienbursed by the Navy, They should have the info on How and What to do to get their money back. I just keep hearing differnt sides to this issue.

I went to a welcome home and the sailor coming from Guam was NOT allowed to wear her uniform. The party that I went with to welcome her home said many many different sailors/soldiers are not allowed to wear the uniform when coming from a foreign country.
Here in the US some bases tell you to wear your and others dont.

Jeanie I was just reading your post ... what is C school? and why in the world does he have to pay for his travel? that maks no sense to me.

C School is even more extensive training for the field the sailor will be in.

Mine is an Engineman, also known as a snipe, who runs the ship. His extra schooling after Great Lakes is in San Diego and is Air Conditioning & Refrigeration. Then he is off to the fleet on an amphibious boat which launches those big hovercraft that land on beaches from the ship.

He knows he will be on that ship for at least 2 years before he can move somewhere else. Something about the ship is underwriting his studies. He comes out of this school with 50 hours toward his journeyman license and only 50 more to go and if he is on duty in the ac&r area each hour counts. He will come out government certified for ac&r. He is doing a 2 yr course load in 10 weeks with all areas of EPA certification also being achieved. Great job opportunity out there when his enlistment is up.

thanks so much for sharing that info...remind your sailor that there are lots of USO s in the airports so if he gets stuck again or laid over for a few hours, that is a good place to go.....

agreed........at the time, late PIR evening, he thought only to call mom! I really didnt mind helping him out with a few phonecalls, i was really missing him at the time...Not much time spent together at PIR.

Our son also had experienced the generosity and kindness from strangers. From tabs picked up in restaurants, handshakes and hugs, to an overweight navy bag being put through at no charge at the airport. When all of us were taking in the sites in the city after Mikey's graduation the three of us (my husband, myself, and my son) were approached by a couple who shook his hand and thanked Mikey for his service to our country, they then turned to my husband and I and they thanked us for raising our a son to be such a honorable person. Tears welled up in my eyes and I barely got out an audible "you are welcomed". I will never forget this for as long as I live. Janice
