I'm sure I don't have to tell you all how I feel right now. My son leaves for GL on Sep. 23. I am anxious, proud, sad, all at the same time. What do you guys know about the nuke program in SC? Can we really visit on weekends? Do they get leave? How often? We live right outside of St. Louis, MO and it will take 14 hours to drive there.
My son went thru the Nuke program in SC. He was married at the time & they lived in base housing. You can visit him on week-ends. If I remember correctly, my son was off on the week-ends. They did do a lot of studying. Sometimes my son would put in 18 to 19 hours a day between class & studying. My son said it is defintely worth it. The school is the toughest part. There are a few hotels up there. The town is called Goose Creek. It is a nice little town
I am very familiar with the area. We live in the upper corner of SC near Greenville and Clemson University. So we are only about 4 hours from Charleston. We hope to get down to see him at least once or twice while he is there.
Hi Janis Kay, my son is also in Goose Creek right now, very intense schooling, a lot of extra hours, but they do have weekends off, but most of them put in a lot of extra hours studying on the weekend. We went to visit in April, although my son couldn't spend a lot of time with us, we made a vacation of it. Charleston is a beautiful area, we spent the day at Patriots Point which was real interesting. We did get to go to dinner with my son a couple of nights. It was nice to see where he is living and see the base. We're in RI, it is about a 16 hour drive, but we took a few days, stopping at Virginia Beach, and Myrtle Beach, like I said we made it our vacation.
Now I'm the brand-newest Nuke Mom!!! My son James was scheduled to go to Great Lakes on July 11th and found out today he's been accepted into the Nuke Program. So now I have no idea when he'll leave for GL - back to MEPS tomorrow.
We're in NE Florida, so I'm glad to know that school is in the Charleston area - only about 3.5 to 4 hours from home... he was originally going to Electronics and would have stayed in GL.
Welcome Marybeth to Nuke Mom's - I have been a Nuke Mom for 6 years now. So any questions, support, etc just let us all know. It is a great group - and congrats on your son getting into the program. Kathy
Hi All,
I am a new NUKE mom as well - I had previously joined the group but Chase is now @ Goose Creek for "A" school. His PIR was on June 6th and he got to S.C. on Wednesday, June 11th. Not too sure about when he actually starts classes but I'm sure I'll find out soon. Thanks for the information about NUKE's - I am certainly one of the "lost" ones.....Take care everyone and I hope to chat again soon.
Danielle
Hi Danielle, welcome to the nuke group, that's the nice thing about this site, there is always someone that's been there before, so you can always get answers to your questions. My son is in SC also, till end of august! Kathy
My son went thru the Nuke school several years ago. He said it was very intense. They do have week-ends off, however, he said you usually spend them stugying. My son also said that it was all worth it.
I'm new to this site and this group. My youngest son enlisted and was accepted into Nukes last week. He leaves for GL Jan 14th '09, so I have a few months to say good bye to him. I don't know if that's good or bad. He knows he's going to SC after GL, but I'm wondering how much time they have off, if any, between the two. Also, after (is it just one 6 month school or 2 6 months each school) can they choose to go to the place in NY (I can't remember the name of the place, but it begins with a B)? We're in NY, so that's why I ask.
I have a son in Goose Creek now, his PIR was 6/13. There is 6 months of A school, then 6 months of Power school, both at Goose Creek. Then there is an additional 6 months (I think it is called protocol school) that is either in SC or NY. I think it depends on what they are going into as to where they do the last 6 months. Adam is an electrician's mate. Don't know as of yet where he will be for the last 6 months.
So I guess while our kids are learning about how the Navy works, so are we. I'm thinking I need to just get used to not knowing everything and not knowing well in advance. Just go with the flow.
Welcome Marlese! My son leaves in Sept. and it is an odd thing to say "goodbye" for so long. It is as if I miss him already and he is sitting right next to me! From what I understand, it is really a neat thing to be accepted into the Nuke program. This is really going to be an adventure! (for all of us!)
