Navy For Moms

Good afternoon everyone. I currently have reservations at the Navy Lodge but I think we may change to the Holiday Inn @ Gurnee because there is alot more to offer in that area. Has anyone ever stayed there and if so can you give me some information on how it was?

I have reservations at a red roof inn about 11 miles from base. What is there to do in Gurnee? I am new to the Navy and not familiar with the PIR yet. My daughter will graduate in July. tina

Hey Tina.... Check out my Posting in the PIR section titled "Coupons and Fun Stuff for PIR".....if you go to that website I believe it is lakecounty.org, but check the posting to be sure, you will not only find lots to do, but coupons to save bucks too!!!

And by the way, just how big is Gurnee? Would you suggest to rent a car, or depend upon the rail and shuttle? We won't have as long as other families....

I don't know about Gurnee, but I would highly recommend Homewood Suites in Lincolnshire, it was a great place with great service and very sailor friendly. Close to lots of amenities and only about 10 minutes away from the base.

I just found this post and we are also staying here. Our PIR is June 20. I had read some nice reviews about this place on this site. I will let you know how everything goes!

Maureen,
I am thinking of staying at the Homewood suites when we go in Aug. How was your stay?
What was the charge for the room and what kind of room did you get? We may get a 2 bedroom, 2 bath suite since there may be 4 of us and an infant.
thanks,
Pennie
Congratulation to your Sailor and hope you had a wonderful trip.

residence inn waukegan is amazing and near base (~3 miles) and near (~5 milles) gurnee mall (restaurants) and near super walmart (~1 mile). A little pricey, but includes breakfast and then really the 2 room suite is such anice atmosphere for sitting around and visiting with each other, etc.

How much in advance can you make your reservations?

If you're are the Navy Lodge... STAY THERE... Holiday Inn at Gurnee is not worth it... see my post on BOOTCAMP that I just posted.... we were not thrilled with Holiday Inn.... too much change of what they told us on the phone..

Could you ellaborate more on why they Holiday Inn wasn't worth it??

While Holiday Inn was clean, the 'complimentary breakfast' was cold cereal and donuts on day of PIR only.. and you had to pay $2.50 for a cup of coffee anyway... the 'free' shuttle left at 6:45am and you had to be on it [you'll need to leave earlier than that to really get the good seats].. 1 time only shot....they returned at 11:15 am only... again, you had to be on it.. THEY set your time and frankly, 11:15am would have rushed us if we had taken it [no time to look at the store for anything, and to wait for son to go get the pics he had ordered that we had to take back with us].... the GURNEE Cabs were worth it to pay the $20 to and from [each] ... that's who they use, they're clean, friendly and dependable..... we used them to go back to the airport [$45 vs. $105]... Holiday Inn is across the street from the big mall...that was nice, but we just weren't impressed with their set rules, lack of friendliness, and all. Their food wasn' t as good as it could have been, and the selection on the menu was poor. But, we did shuttles and taxis.. if you had your own car, it would be better with less dependent on what THEY said or had.... looking back, we would have rented a car and had it waiting for us at the motel... still would have shuttled back and forth to the base paying the $20 each trip, but we would have had more freedom to hit the other close eating places.

At my son's PIR 5/30, we rented a car at Midway Airport and we are glad that we did. We had our own freedom to go wherever, and do whatever, whenever we cared to. It is really much wiser to not depend on public transportation if you are interested in getting around or running your own schedule.
Across from the Holiday Inn is a Comfort Inn. The Comfort Inn was absolutely a great place to stay. The morning complimentary breakfast was always delicious and the staff extremely friendly. Rooms were always clean, the pool a bit heavy on chlorine, but very refreshing. It is situated directly east of the mall and has a Shake and Steak right next door which we enjoyed getting delicious shakes at one night.
I keep hearing not so good comments about the Holiday Inn, which is too bad because from the appearance of the outside of it, it looked magnificent. I don't know what other's paid to stay there, but if you are looking for a medium priced hotel that really was a nice experience......check out the Comfort Inn in Gurnee.
(note: at first when we pulled up to the building, i thought it looked a bit weather-worn and i was a bit cautious, but i guess you can't judge a book by it's cover, as well stated here>>the Holiday Inn looked great, but wasn't so great>>the Comfort Inn looked not-so-great at first, but was very clean and comfortable)
