Preston recieve a waiver for an eye condition( his corneas are coning)that he has back in November. He called me today and said that he would be home in two weeks due to his waiver not being valid. How is that possible? Public affairs told me that it would be 2 - 6 weeks before he could come home. And all that his recruiter knew is that is was medical related. I don't know if his eyes have got worse or are causing additional problem? The not know is torture.

Any suggestion of who I can call or what I can do to get more information?

Is Preston still in boot camp at Great Lakes or has he already gone on to "A" school?

In other words, where is he right now???

When did he arrive at Great Lakes?

Did you sons both get waivers from MEPS doctors or from your own doctors? I am curious as my son got a waiver from a MEPS doctor.

My daughter also left for Great Lakes with a medical waiver from MEPS. She left on June 17th, and after 2 weeks in bootcamp and processing they decided to not accept her waiver also. So on July 1st she was transferred to Ship 17 for a medical discharge where she is still sitting and waiting to come home. This seems to be happening a lot. I tried calling legal on my daughters behalf and all that happened was the runaround and well rehearsed answers to the questions they probably get all the time......like- there a lot of recruits waiting, 10 business days or "beyond" to see legal, then sent to some dept. ? for processing and setting up transportation home... Then wait for that date. I might have to have her dad, my exhusband call again if nothing happens here soon. But with the way he deals with things I'm afraid it could make things worse for her.
On the Ship 17 forum I believe it is there are some numbers Rose listed for medical and legal. You could try calling one of those numbers and see if you have better luck than me.

Hi Tammy, I set up Ship 17 Moms. sign up and there are numbers posted to help you. Also, I will send you a friend request, if you like, so I can talk to you via private messages if you wish.My son was discharged from Great Lakes in May, not for medical, but we do have the numbers you need.

Just FYI, when they leave to come back it is at their expense. Your daughter may want to verify this information so that she doesnt get stuck like my son did having to pay $450.00 for his trip back to his home base. It was that much, it was his plane fair and his backage checkin. American Airlines charges for baggage and my son had 5 of them.

does he have keratoconus?

I am so sorry that this happened to him but as so many other moms have told you the waiver that had been done at MEPS may not be enough. Is he still with his division? or has he been sent to ship 17? if he is still with his division if he is still with the division that is a plus as long as it is not the keratconus he may be able to get a waiver. He will have to go through seeing a specialist at boot camp and then they will have to give their opinion on if this is something that can or can not get a waiver, then this must go up the chain of command to be signed off, this is a good thing as that way he still has a possibility to be granted a waiver.

Please let me know if I can be of assistance
