Navy For Moms

Our son has been promoted to Chief and the Pinning Ceremony should be in September in Virginia. The last ceremony we attended was Boat Camp graduation and SWCC graduation which was years ago. Any other promotions he has always been out of the country so he didn't participate in the ceremonies back home. I have no idea what to expect and little time to plan anything.

I'm looking for information on what to expect and what is expected of us - protocol, what the ceremony entails. Any information anyone can share would be helpful. We've been searching the internet but have been unsuccessful to finding specifics on the ceremony. Do you throw a party, give a gift, etc. We traditionally have been giving a gift for each promotion, but coming up with ideas is getting harder and harder

Congrats to your Son!! Very Special thing to happen to him....I'd say Anthony Morrison probably gave you the best advice you can get since he's been there and knows the routine......I hope you get to go and take LOTS of pictures!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not the mother of a sailor, but my husband is and was also just promoted to Chief. I have been to a few other pinnings for friends and it is a very special ceremony filled with tradition and heritage. I have seen several guys that we know receive really nice watches as gifts from family and friends. After the pinning ceremony your son will most likely have to go to the Chief's Mess for a little reception. Your best bet is to get in touch with your son, if you can, and ask him if you could have his sponsors phone number. Each Selectee is supposed to have a Genuine Chief as a sponsor and that is the person you should get in touch with because they will be able to give you all the info. you are looking for. My husbands sponsor has been invaluable. If your son is married you could also ask his wife for the sponsors contact information. If you don't have that information available you could then try as a last resort to contact your son's Master chief at his squadron. He is the Man/Woman who will have all the answers. I hope this has helped and that your son will stay safe always. Congratulations, thank you, and thank your son.

Hi Nancy
I just said to myself I have to go out and closed my discussion as we are getting close to the Pinning Ceremony (9/16). Thanks for the additional information - as I'm getting bits and pieces from my son. He did mention who his sponsor was (an individual from his original DET in San Diego) but hasn't provided me with any additional information, which is nice that it is someone that really knows him.

I keep hoping that an invitation will be forthcoming like in Boot Camp or his SWCC graduations. Our son isn't married and I try to space my questions - you know how they get when we keep asking questions!! Our son just returned from overseas when he got word of his promotion but then was sent back out for 1-2 weeks. He just got back again so he his exhausted and has to catch up with the Chief Selectee stuff. We got to spend sometime with him last weekend but he spent most of the time doing his fundraising, essays, etc for the Pinning Ceremony. Will your husbands Ceremony be on the East Coast? Maybe I'll see you there.

Thank you - you have been a great help. Denise
