Navy For Moms

Does anyone know what is the procedure for posting an article in your local newspaper about your child's graduation from boot camp and receiving his award? We have a small commuity newspaper and I am always seeing small articles with their grad picture about local kids accomplishments in the military. Is this done by the military or is it something we do on our own? I don't want to do anything not appropriate and get my son in trouble but I would like to let the school and community know of his accomplishments.

Hi Janet, I believe this is done by the the military . Your son needs to sign a release form for the home town paper. His recruiter should know how to go about this. I have not seen me sons in our paper either I don't know how long it takes. My son said that he signed the paper. So I am going to talk to his recruiter next week to find out.

My son said that they did this themselves at GL. He (dummy) did not put his in the paper. Of course, it was not necessary - I tell everyone I see - wear shirts (Proud Navy Mom) - bumper sticker on car - key chain - flag on house and decorations when he came home on leave!!!

Dear Janet...just to let you know ...my daughter requested that it be in 3 papers...where I work, where I live and her grandparents closest daily..no problem..it was in all three...

This isn't done by the military. I took his BC picture to our local newspaper (small town here too), I typed up that he had completed Boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Recruit Training center, where that is located, and where he will be going and what he will be going into. They didn't even charge for this. We also put his address in the paper when he went to BC.

Our son recruiter asked him if he wanted it put in our local newspaper . So a week before my son left for BC his recruiter went over with him the information that would appear in the newspaper. So I just assumed that the recruiters do it if the recruit says it's okay to do so. You may want to contact the recruiter.

I e-mailed my local paper and asked them. They told me to write certain things about him, parents, branch, rank, and where he graduated from and year. They also had me send his picture as a j-peg. Our local paper publishes military news on Sundays. So, this Sunday I'll know if it's been published.

Hello: I know it just somehow appeared in our local news papers one week and we were not the ones who put it there. all the information about his graduation was listed and the only other people who would have had that information would have had would have been some one from the military. It sure was nice to see it. No picture was included with the article tho. so if you want one you might want to talk to your local papers about it.

I think you have to put it in the paper. Our local paper has a page dedicated to the kids who are graduating from every branch of the service and they list all the area people who are serving at this time. My mother was asking the same question, and I think it would have to be the family notifying the newspaper.

Janet- I had our small local paper run a little article when our son first left for BC, it stated that he had entered Boot Camp, and it had his address for any of his friends that wanted to write him. This gave him more mail than what I had imagined. Then, when he graduated I put another article in the paper that had his picture from BC along with what he would be doing next. The paper here does not charge for these articles. But this is not done by the military. If they had to do this for each and every sailor, can you imagine how long it would take.... Our son did sign up for this at BC, but they told them they would not guarantee it, so they suggested they have their families do this if they wanted. So we did it and our paper was NEVER contacted by the military to put it in.

Ok I was told by the recruiters office that my sons recruiter has to do it (his recruiter will not be back until the end of the week) I have spoke to the office 3 times now about it. They left me a message on my phone friday that said it would be taken care of and his recruiter will write it and get in touch with me about family part of article. That's been my experience anyway! So still waiting to see how it all turns out. If they take much longer I will just do my own!

I work for the newspaper in my town. We get the bootcamp graduation notices from the recruiters in town. I must say that our Navy recruiter is much more lax on submitting than other branches of the military. It is usually just basic generic info such as name, dates, base, etc. There is sometimes a photo included, but not always with the Navy ones. Maybe I should have a talk with the recruiter now that its personal to me!
Some papers will have their editorial staff include a notice submitted by a private party, but others will have a charge depending on the size like a personal display ad. Every newspaper has their own policy.

Just a update on my experience with getting an article in the local paper. Now I have spoken to recruiters office 5 times. They all give me to someone else, who gives me to someone else. My son had 3 recruiters during his DEP. One of who has since retired. None of them were very helpful. So I did my own to the best of my ability and took it to the local paper. The gentlemen there was half asleep and couldn't be more uninterested in what I had to say. So I will keep you posted if it actually comes out in the paper! This has been a nightmare!!
