Navy For Moms

Hi-

I just found out that my son is apart of a Grad N Go division. Which means right after graduation he goes to his A school (a hours of liberty at most). I am hurt that I wait 8 weeks to see him then only get to see him a few hours before he ships out while other sailors get the whole weekend for liberty.

I need to know more about his Grad N Go division, because it will affect my travel plans to Chicago. It's a long flight from my home. He did not mention the Grad N Go to me, but to this father, so I do need to confirm this information.

Sigh......

It is my understanding that not ALL new sailors who are doing their A school IN Great Lakes are required to move to their new quarters ON graduation day...some are not moved for several days up to a week. that doesn't even make sense...I do not think they would be able to handle that many sailors moving out at one time!! It takes them a week to "Class up the Boot camp"
That might be part of the reason why the only thing they can bring back to the barracks with them after graduation is a watch. Now if your new sailor is traveling to another state for A school then that is a different story...they very well could be shipped out immediately after graduation...but most of them already know that like Kathryne below

How do I know if my son is staying in GL or going Pensacola?

Make sure that his unit is not going to have to stay there, My son was supposed to be grad and go on January 4, he did not leave for San Antonio until the end of January. He actually talked me into driving to Great Lakes for Christmas to adopt him and a friend, in which I was very happy to do instead of coming for what he thought would be just an hour before Grad and Go.

Just make sure of his orders before deciding not to go for grad...

My son is grad and go also..The short time we get to see him will be better than no time at all..We are going up on Wednesday so we can go and do some things in Chicago on Thursday..We did have to change our plans and come back home on Sat instead of Sunday..I was so mad about grad and go at first all he wanted to do was spend time with his brothers after Graduation...I wish the Navy would ask the MOMS first..LOL....Good Luck to all of you....See you there !

You can normally go to the airport and sit with them until they fly away. It is hard, it just depends on what A school they are going to and where. He must be starting A School at some other base on Monday of the next week. Ask him to check with his command to see if they can give him any better details, your right to fly to chicago and then not see you guy is a big expense. Hopefully they can help. If they can't email the ombudsman for the base they may be able to help you.
