how far is the navy lodge? according to the flyer i got in the graduation packet the red carpet in is only a mile away but i wasn't sure if you can really just walk to the base? i'm guessing it's probably still a walk from the base gate all the way to wherever you park? i was thinking it would be nice to bypass the whole traffic issue but wasn't sure if it's realistic.
We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Waukegan. They have a shuttle to the PIR (although we drove the rental car)...the hotel is recently remodeled and very comfortable. I called the hotel directly to make reservations and was given the PIR discount, which made our stay only $80 a night. Good luck. Just make sure that no matter where you stay, give yourself plenty of time to get through security at the base and don't forget your PIR information or IDs...

The Red Carpet inn is w/i walking distance. It is not a difficult walk. It is safe...about a mile or so. If it is raining - it may be too long and if you have a disability or are elderly, it may be too long. Many hotels offer free shuttles to the base -- find out before booking, if this is what you are looking for.
Also - drive past the entrance about a block further. On the same side, turn in to where you would to catch the train. There is a parking lot there. It is a buck to park there and a perfect spot to be for graduation. The lot fills up -- be there early to get this prime parking...w/o the hassle of driving on base. You will need to walk on to base w/ an ID ready. (one short block away)
Many hotels in the area (as far as Gurnee) will shuttle to PIRs. Also, as an FYI, we got to the base early - probably around 6:00'ish. I know, ceremony doesn't start until 9:00, but getting there that early is WELL worth it! We really just flew thru the vehicle inspection, parking, and everything. We had a short wait in line to get into the hall, but once we were in there we were able to get the best seating possible in my son's Division section. Mind you, it was quite a wait for the ceremony but the ease of it all since we were there so early made it worth it!
Good luck!
We are heading home from our amazing PIR on 10.10. There are no hotel within walking distance. It's all Navy stuff, exchanges, schools, VA etc. Important things to remember
1. LEAVE EARLY - if you make sure you arrive at 6:30am or earlier you will have no problems. We arrived right around 6:30am and the line of cars was nothing at this time. I could see they were flowing into the base quite efficiently.
2. CHOOSE TO PARK IN THE METRO IF YOU ARE ABLE BODIED. We chose to stay out of the right lane go pass the entrance and turn right into the metro lot, which is the next driveway, same side of the street. We had a longer walk, but it was a beautiful day so we didn't mind. It was easy to get into and really easy to get out of
3. DID I SAY GET THEIR EARLY!
4.GET YOUR DIVISION SHIRT RIGHT AWAY. As we sat there the line got longer and longer. We were glad we walked right up to a table got our shirt, and then sat right down with no problem.
Hello,
my daughter had her PIR on 9/5/08. We stayed at the Candlewood Suites. The drive too the base was so easy and traffic was not bad at all. We stayed for three days and loved it, we had family that came and moved from one hotel to the one we were in because it was so nice.. It had a living room, kitchen with a stovetop, microwave, full size refridgerator, pantry to store food, fully equiped with pots pans dishes glasses even has a dishwasher and they supply all of the cleaning liquids. The bedroom was very nice as well. and the sofa pulled out into a bed. I highly recommend this "hotel" and the cost was comparable to the other hotels. If you need help locating it just let me know. It took about 3 minutes to get to the base each morning (other than the day of PIR). Congrats!
I live on Base. the Navy Lodge is not far from the base. but it is a good 15 min. However, I do not rec staying there. Traffic is always a problem every friday. You can park on base but when it comes time to leave- everyone is doing it all at once! I would take a cab there or better yet a snazzy limo. They have them pretty cheap here.
