Navy For Moms

My son is in his second week of bootcamp. He enlisted with a Navy Seal contract. Does anyone have any usefull info about what to expect after basic? We know that he'll stay at Great Lakes for more PT training the be sent to San Diego for BUDDS. Any info on what to expect would be a big help.

Hi Shawna, is your son in Waukegan? What's he doing in the Navy?

Hi Devon!

When our son went to Boot Camp, we craved information too. These are the two things we found that helped. First, we found this website created by a recruit . Particularly insightful is his blog about his journey through boot camp and A school.

We also found a book called "Honor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Boot Camp" that's slightly dated (2002) but gives a pretty good idea of what the recruits are going through. It follows a co-ed ship from orientation to battle stations. If you can't find it online but want more info, shoot me an e-mail.

Hi Devon:

Just to say Hi and share to keep expectations in check. My son was in EOD (Seals) and out of 50 guys only 3 made it to the next phase. The next phase is every harder becuae it involves a lot of classroom work but the PT continues to be challenging. I learned to take it one day at a time. My son was one that washed out, he was terribly disappointed and is being reassigned. I believe this is the way it has to be, they ones who make it through this need to be the only ones with the skills to handle the challenges for this particular job.

Best wishes and prayers for your son,
Sue

I'd love to know how your son got the SEAL contract!! How old is he? Is this his first time to apply for it?

Hi Karen. Nathan will be 19 next monday. When he enlisted he knew that he wanted to be a SEAl. If I remember correctly, first he had to have a certain score on his ASVAP, then he had to take a PT test. He passed and was given a SEAL contract. This was around November of last year. He then spent the next appr 9 mths training with a retired SEAL. During this time he had to retest a few times to be sure that he was still prepared. Hes final PT SEAL test was 14 days before he left for basic. I may be forgetting a step in ther somewhere but thats pretty much how he got the SEAL contract going in. It is his first time to apply. Do you have somebody in pre-buds or BUDS?
