Hi Tamie,
I do not think my son got a sign on bonus and he went through boot camp with your son. How much is it and does everyone get it? Thanks for the info!

Hi Maureen, How are you haven't heard from you in awhile.
how is your sailor?
Mike got a sign on bonus when he inlisted, he had some college so they offered him a bonus.

yeah I believe they do get it after A school. But I don't know how long it actually takes. My husband is in A school currently.

Hi my husband had to go apply at the financial office when he arrived here on base for his first duty. Not everyone gets a bonus unless of course they sign up for it when they enlist and it is offered. My husband got his for having a college degree. They said they will tax it and it should come in about a month or so. So we are just waiting on it to come but I do know that you def only get once you get to your first duty or that you can sometime take 20 percent out when you first get to A school but you have to ask for it. It was offered to my husband but he wanted to wait till he got to his first station.

My daughter also got a sign on bonus but didn't receive it till August which was 9 months after she completed A school.

Hi Tammie,
My son gets a sign on bonus. He is to get half after bc and the other half spread out his 4 year contract. So his recruiter told us

It is in their contract when they sign on. Depends what you are getting the sign on bonus for - could be any number of things. There are also re-enlistment bonuses. Certain jobs like my son's - sonar tech have a sign on bonus. Also special ops had sign on bonuses. He was 1st told he'd get it after boot camp, then after A school, then after C school, then no, after his 1st assignment. Well he's in Japan now - so we'll see. He is suppose to get $8000, but after taxes it is conciderably less - unbelievable!
Another big issue is why are these boys having to pay thier state tax from home? We live in Massachusetts, better know as "Taxachusetts" here. My son pays a ridiculous amount in Mass. tax and he hasn't been home in 1 1/2 years and will now be in Japan for 3 years. I don't understand why they have to pay state tax!!!

I thought they didn't have to if they were oversea's?

HI,
My son is always going to be a Sonar Tech. He is in Groton in Techno school now. A School is next. His sign on bonus is $9,000. He says that he is planning to put half in his thrift savings plan and it wouldn't be taxed ... at least not now. We are from Maine. Second highest taxed state in the nation.

What I'm wondering is, Drew really wants to go to Japan, but didn't think members of sub crew went to Japan. Your son is a Sonar tech. Is he on a sub?

Hi Dianne,
My son is on a destroyer and he is a sonar tech in Yokosuka.. Don't know if there are subs there, but I would think there are. Aren't subs with every battle group?
He was told this is a very active base and so far that is true. He came back last Thursday and is already out again.
What little he has gotten to see of Japan so far, he loves. Everyone says Japan is the place to be!
He just told me his ship might be in dry dock next summer, so I may go to see him. I am a teacher, so summer works for me!

Thanks. I am a teacher, too, so summer works for me as well.

I was told they do not allow subs to be based in Japan because of the whole Nuclear powered thing. I'm not sure, though.

Thanks for responding.

Hi Dianne,
Well I'm not sure of that because the George Washigton just replaced the Kitty Hawk and the George Washington is nuclear - although my son said the Japanese were not happy about it and there were protests there because of those concerns.
I'll email my son and ask him. Maybe other moms know. check the forum for Japan moms. I go on there but I forget if there is anyone with a loved one on a sub in Japan.
