MY SON NEEDS HELP!! ANYONE NEAR PORTSMOUTH OR HAVE A CHILD OR SIGNIFICANT OTHER THERE?

Hi Guys.. I need some serious help here..I have no where else to turn but to you guys.

My only son is Stationed on the US Truman parked at Portsmouth VA. Right after he got there his Wallet and Cell phone charger was stolen. So of course he cancelled his ATM card etc. Well now over 3 weeks later he doesnt have a new card yet and I havent spoken to my boy FOREVER except by instant messanger. I am fighting with Armed Forces Bank to get my Power of Attorney processed so I can discuss these things with them and find out where the hell his card is but thats not going to fix my problem at hand.

My son apparently is TERRIFIED of the Portsmouth area. Now we live in Northern CA and this is a 19 year old boy who isnt afraid to go into San Francisco alone so it must be pretty damm bad. And after talking to many people who know the area which I do not I have been told that he has every right to be afraid. He OBVIOUSLY doesnt have any money to get a cab,bus ect..and would be afraid to anyway right now. So this is my issue.. He hasnt had cash in weeks! He tells me he is Freezing every morning working and needs to buy a hoodie. He has money but of course its in the bank, plenty of it but no access. The Armed Forces Bank has a Branch right next to the Norfolk base but he has no way to get there. He doesnt have a car so he cant drive and says that since he is fairly new there he really doesnt have anyone to ask. I would think the base would have some type of transpo from one area to another but apparently not. So what the poor kid needs is a ride.. a simple ride. What I am hoping is somoene knows someone who either lives there or has a family member with transporation thats on or near his Ship that could pick him up in the next day or two..(sooner than later since the poor kid is freezing) and just give him a ride to go to the nearest western union where i have now sent him some money and to find a cingular store to buy a cell charger after that. Apparently there is not a Western Union at the shipyard. His charger was stolen when his wallet was taken so I havent heard his voice FOREVER! My only contact with him is instant messanger on the days he doesnt have duty when he gets off work. I do know what his Birth is called ..aparently its called the Reactor? Soooo can anyone help me here.. I would soooooooo aprriciate it!!

This is part of a blog he just wrote on his myspace tonight..I just want to cry!!

Ok, so I'm still here in virginia, and its just dandy. I'm currently in Portsmouth to be exact for the next 5 months, and for those of you who dont know what is so special about Portsmouth I'll tell you, It's a giant ghetto. So basically I don't leave the shipyard for fear of my life. I tried to leave on one occasion to find to very gang looking gentlemen making a straight line on my position. Now, I've been jumped before, and I can't really say they were going to jump me, but I had a good feeling nothing good was about to happen. So, in response to their movements I proceaded to sprint to the gate I had left out of as if they were going to murder me. Can I say that may have been a bit predjudece of me? Well yeah, but most of the black people in california do not look like these ones and the ones I met in Dallas shook me up last time, so I covered my tracks.

Stephanie, my son is in Virginia also (although right at this moment he is in Kentucky at school), he was living on the base in Norfolk and his ship is in Newport News. I know there are shuttle buses that he could use to go to Newport News and some other places - I would think there would be a shuttle bus that could get your son to the Nex in Norfolk. There is probably Western Union right there at the Nex.

And the banking advice isn't top priority right now, but I will tell you that my son uses Navy Fed and everything about dealing with them has been excellent, so good that he has let me know that as a family member I could switch my banking to them. It really might be worth the effort for your son to switch. Navy Fed can probably advise him on how to change his direct deposit. The sailors can do quite a bit on line with their tax deductions, etc., so he might be able to change it that way, probably have both accounts for a few weeks until the change is complete.

And it might help you as a mom to know that temperature is relative - my son can't stand how hot it usually is in Virginia and your son says he's freezing! I just looked at weather.com and it is 55 degrees in the morning, but it warms up later. I know it's awful to feel like your kid is miserable and you're trying so hard to help make it better, and it sure will be nice when he can finally get a sweatshirt or something, but at least it might comfort you a little bit to know that it isn't really freezing.

I was going to call the other kid I know stationed in Virginia and now I just remembered he's at school too! Talk about timing - bummer. If I can find out any other info to help I will pass it on to you. It sounds like you're doing a good job trying to help your son, and, remember, he will be alright. I know it really sucks right now, but he will be okay.

Stephanie, be sure to check your friend requests. I sent you a message. My son is an MA stationed in Norfolk. I know it is a big place, but maybe he can help! Check your messages, then get in touch with me if you still need help.

Stephanie,
My son is out on a deployment. I've contacted a friend of his who is stationed there to see if she is able to help but also do not know if she's in port or out for an exercise at sea. You could wire your son some money to whatever bank is near his ship/area. Or, your son should ask / post to see if anyone that he's working with or on his ship could give him a lift to the bank there. Norfolk itself is a beautiful area and we've gone through Portsmouth but think like any cities that there are crime areas as well as nice areas. The USO also is a good contact point for you /your son and there's a big branch in Norfolk and you can go to the USO website and even get a phone number/contact information. They exist to support military/familes.

Good luck and will let you know if I hear anything back.

Hello Stephanie,
My son is stationed in Norfolk. He was at the shipyard for about 6 months. It isn't a real safe place by what he has told me. Thank God he had his truck there. He is due back in Norfolk in just a few days. Maybe him and your son can meet. Keep in touch.

Stephanie, I am new to this site but I may have some help for you. I am in northern California, my best friends brother is in norfolk and is I think a Commander in Chief or something like that. He is pretty high up in the Navy. Let me see what I can do about getting ahold of her today. She is at work but her brother has alot of pull. If you would like give me a call later this afternoon, maybe about 5 or 6 and I will have gotten a hold of her. First email me and let me know if this might work and then I can give you my number. Maybe he can help out a little if not a lot. Take care and I will contact you when I get ahold of her. Give me your number also if you would like and I can call you.

FYI: President of the United States is the Commander in Chief.

Stephanie,

I cannot tell you how I feel for you and your son. My son has NO 'buddy', nor a CO who is helpful. In fact, his CO has it in for him and has been ridiculing him in public about his tatoo, his playing soccer ['there's no way in h*ll I'm going to approve you playing soccer for the Navy and leaving here... and if you go over my head, I'll tell them to reject you too",] This is a boy who loves the game, and uses it as an only way to get rid of his frustration of walking 4 miles every day one way to get to work because he doesn't have a car either...

What is it with this Navy? Once they get you past school, they drop you and treat you like crap!! He's had no help either!

Will be praying for yours, as well as mine.
