Navy For Moms

Has anyone ever heard of or have a son/daughter stationed on a small military island called Diego Garcia. My son Jonathan should have arrived their today. They flew him from California to Japan, from Japan to Singapore and then from Singapore to Diego. He is on his 6th year as a proud member of the Navy. He was aboard the Kitty Hawk in Japan when it was decomissioned and he was on the Eisenhower in Virginia prior to his 4 years in Japan. We are soo very proud of him and he is an awesome young man.

I know Diego Garcia - there is not much there! The Pacific Fleet will use it as a port on occassion. Did he ever stop there while he was on the Kitty Hawk? When my husband was stationed in Yokosuka, I know his ship stopped by there once or twice over the years. If you want more info on it, I'll be happy to ask him.

Otherwise I think he needs some good sunscreen!!!

An Atoll in the Indian Ocean. Houses the Navys' largest ships and biggest Military cargo jets.In 1971 the Seabees began the largest peacetime' construction project.Lasted 11 years, cost was 11 million dollars.Base was invaluable during "OP. Desert Field". Sounds like a pretty "interesting' Port. Thanks to him for all his hard efforts to this point.

I was stationed there, it is where I met my husband. I LOVED it! Very beautiful, with coconut trees, and jungle and gleaming white sand beaches. But it is isolated. Very, very isolated. When I was there, making phone calls was horribly expensive and there was no internet, but I think that's changed. There's a gym, a pool and sports, wind surfing and fishing ... I was very fit and tan when I was there. There's a small mini-mart, a clinic, a Navy Fed CU, and most meals are eaten at the chow hall. We did have a weird little fast food place the Navy ran near the barracks, but it was awful. There was (is?) a merchant marine club and the ex-pat club and sailors could go there for meals if they wanted to pay for them. They used to show movies outside, projected on a wall.

We all rode bikes, there were only military vehicles with limited uses. We could check out vehicles to go on the far side of the base (nature preserve) for picnics. That's where the wild donkeys live. We could also rent small craft to use in the lagoon; we went out and the dolphins came right up to us and wanted to race. They really do flips in the air and such in the wild! There is no town, the civilians are military contract workers or merchant marines. I don't know the current female/male ratio, but it was one to one hundred when I arrived. Should be fifty-fifty or more now. No one is under 18, no one is accompanied, there's not much to do. We called it Club Med Indian Ocean, even though we worked six days a week, we had fun. We had a lot of guys who loved fishing and we'd have big cookouts behind the barracks.

I have no idea how much of this is the same.

Sunblock, certainly! And swim trunks and water shoes (the coral can cut your feet).

My husband is retired AF. We had several friends stationed there and they loved it. A very close knit community. He will love it.

My daughter has been on Diego Garcia since April. It's beautiful -- extremely remote with absolutely no tourism. She's been in for 4 years. What's his job? She's an MA- K9 handler. Linda
