Navy For Moms

I am looking for information on Nuclear Power Training in Ballston Spa, New York. My son will be going there in December and has to find his own housing. What is the weather like in Ballston Spa in December? Does anyone know the best areas to look in for housing? Does the navy provide any transportation or expense for traveling from Goose Creek to Ballston Spa, my son does not have a car at this time but is looking for one. We are from California and I have never been to New York, any information will be appreciated.

The Albany Airport is only about 15 minutes if that. The airport, like Ballston Spa is on the Northway, Interstate 87. Believe me, they really don't get as much snow as you may think, but it does get cold. However he is from California, so...I guess a little is a lot. It is actually safer to drive where he will be living than if it snowed in the south because we are equipped with salt trucks and plows that keep the roads clean. If you travel Interstate 90 West (NY State Thruway) the Northway brings you to the airport (outside of Albany) and further down is the exit to Ballston Spa so there isn't much travel time for him. He may want to contact Chamber of Commerce... http://www.saratoga.org/community/village-of-ballston-spa.asp for help, maps, housing. Cars are inexpensive, too.
He will fall in love with the area and the people..It's a small community, with little suburbs around.
If you need anything, let me know. Good Luck. My son's going to Pensacola in December for A School

Our son has been a nuke for over four years--his favorite place so far was his time in Saratoga Springs when he was at Ballston Spa, NY for power school. We had the same questions, but are only an 8 hour drive (much easier to check out the situation!). The Navy has apartments for rent (at least they did a couple years ago), unfurnished, but reasonable, in what used to be military housing, but is now civilian managed. The Saratoga Springs area is at the southern foothills of the Adirondacks region, a huge area of mostly undeveloped mountains and lakes, with both summer and winter recreation. It does have a good, cold winter, with snow. I'm not sure about the transportation/moving expenses....my son was never very good at figuring that stuff out. He wound up driving himself up; I came soon afterwards and spent a weekend helping him find a mattress and other household goods at the area Goodwill stores (we went to Albany as well as some of the small towns). Try Naval Housing at 26 Quiet Harbor, Saratoga Springs, NY 518-584-3033.

My son is in New York now and will be graduating Oct.31 but is staying till Feb. He made ELT school. He left Goosecreek in April and came home to get married in May, than left from Mobile, AL to New York in a u-haul, they had to pay their way than got reimburse after they got there. The weather is in the 40's /50's but they expecting snow in about 3 weeks per my daughter-in-law. They are leaving on base they went to Navy housing dept. some of his friends don't have a car they just pulled together and ask to be on the same shifts so they could ride together. I was just talking to my daughter in law and were laughing about them driving in the snow because they are far from in the south. Over all they are doing good.

Hi Sandy, my son is currently at Balston Spa, he started Sept 8. He found and apt on line that catered to Navy personell, it is actually in Wilton, about 15 min ride to B.Spa, but he really likes it. He did not get a roomate this time, he did have one in SC. He has a 2 br apt for 700, and the utilities are pretty inexpensive. He hasn't experience the winters yet, but I am told they are very cold & snowy. We're from RI so he's kind of used to that. I know Adam did get reimbursed for moving exp, his furniture was moved by the navy, and he took his personal things in his truck. He seems to be happy there, but I know the hours and the work load is pretty intense. The first 2 months he's been able to come home weekends, we're a little over 3 hr. drive, but now his shift changes so he won't always have time off on the weekend. Well good luck, any questions i can answer for you let me know. Kathy

My son used the internet to find the house him and his roommates are staying at now!! Just have him start early to search!! some waited too long with my son and had to find some where to stay that ended up further away from the "base" My son is in Saratoga Springs. Most of the landlords only rent to Military knowing that they will be good renters!!

My son had a car and he just weighed before and after it was loaded. He got paid for that and for the gas and hotels he stayed at. The thing to remember....KEEP your receipts, my son "lost" a couple gas receipts!! There were 4 cars that went up to NY at once, just followed each other!!

I don't know about the transportation part, but i'm sure he can bum a ride up to NY. But it is best to have a car before he gets to NY because the "base" is not too close!!

Thanks so much for your information. My son is searching for a car and we plan to drive up with him after graduation, then he can fly home with us for Christmas. We live in California so the snow will be a new experience. Did you go to the Power School graduation, if so where did you stay?

Hi! At first my son told us that the graduation from power school (Ballston Spa) was a big deal and we were planning to go there to see him graduate, and now the story has changed to, no it's not a big graduation ceremony. We went to Goose Creek when he graduated from there, and it was very nice. Can anyone tell me what kind of ceremony it is?
Thanks
