Navy For Moms

My son has just received his orders for Pearl Harbor. He should be home on leave in a couple of weeks before he goes and he wants to buy a car. Because a car would have to be shipped to him, does he really need one while he is there? Does anyone know what the public transportation is like in Honolulu? Should he buy a car now or wait?

When I was a kid, Dad had our car shipped to us in Hawaii. We lived over near Ewa Beach, the old Barber's Point housing. Definitely needed a car out there. Even as a kid, I knew there were problems with the car after shipping, the battery was dead and the ashtrays were full of butts. I hope they've straightened that out.

Hawaii does have decent bus systems, but a car would be a good idea there. Lots of day trip places to go, things to see. Still, he should wait to see where he gets to park it, where he'll be living and so on. Many sailors sell their cars when transferring, it is usually possible to get something reliable inexpensively. Does he have a sponsor? They'd know the current local market and what has worked for others at Pearl.

Thanks for the info Anti M. We actually found out yesterday that he will be going to C school in San Diego for about 5 months before he heads off to Pearl Harbor. So that will give him more time to do some research on this. He has really been saving his money and has a VERY specific car in mind. Since this is going to be his first major purchase, I was really hoping that we, as his parents, could be there to help guide him with the purchase and financing but I really don't want him to buy a car here (Delaware) and have to drive it cross country by himself. So I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens. Thanks again.

My son just got orders to Pearl Harbor this past June, we were planning on shipping his car out to him, but he said it would take to long. He needed a car almost immediately upon his assignment there since he is on shore duty. He said the transit system is terrible in HI, there are no trains or buses (virtually), he was used to an excellent transit system when he was stationed in Japan. He bought a car by the 3rd day he was there, he's now selling that (a Cougar, maybe your son will be interested in buying it from my son! It's advertised on Craig's List) He bought a Truck and a motorcycle! He said you absolutely have to have a car to get around in HI.

If the Navy is paying for it to be shipped and he really wants a car over there, then I would say to buy one here and have it shipped. How long is he going to be there? My son is there for the second time and it depends on if he is living on base or off base. Things are very convenient there and there are a lot of taxis to go to town.

I would find out how long shipping takes these days. The official estimate seems to be 21 days from the West Coast.

>>>>
Automobile shipments
Each service member is authorized to ship one privately owned vehicle at government expense. You must have permission from the lien holder to transport the vehicle to Hawaii. If the vehicle is co-registered, you must also show that person's permission to ship the vehicle. If you are shipping a privately owned vehicle ( POV ) it will require approximately 60 days from the east coast or 21 days from the west coast to reach Oahu. All personal vehicles must be safety inspected and registered within 10 days after arrival on the island. <<<<<<

Google to find out if his command has a Welcome Aboard site where he can find details about a POV in Hawaii.

POV = privately owned vehicle

My brother had a motorcycle in Hawaii ... perfect most of the time, except he had to wear a rain suit now and then.

My daughter is stationed in Hawaii and had to buy a car the 1st week she was there as there is no transporation where she is stationed. I still have her car that she left here because they told her even though the Navy would pay to ship it there it could take up to two months from the East Coast.

Public transportation is Great in Hawaii. If I was your son I would buy a car in Hawaii..
alot of people sell their cars before they leave the Island. some family has 2 cars and the Navy will only ship one car.. but they may have changed since I was there in 2005. It cost us about $900.00 bucks to ship my car back from there.

He has several differant places he can purchase a used car.
Hickham Air Force base has a lot .. which is across from Pearl Harbor and also he can go up Schoefield Barracks. and if he likes tinkering with cars Schoefiled Barracks has a Junk Yard
that has cars that are running and are up for auction.( and some of those cars are real nice ) .
the bidding starts off at $250.00 and of course the highest biddger gets the car.

Tags are cheap in Hawaii for Military.. in 05 we paid $20.00 but they have to get a paper from their command saying they are stationed there. and inpections are like $15.00

The city buses runs like every 20 mins around Pearl and downtown is like every 8 mins
I road the bus more then I drove . I hated dealing with the Traffic.. and looking for parking places.

My son and nephew both just got assigned to pearl harbor. How exciting. My nephew went over there about a month ago and my son is going next June. they shipped my nephews motorcycle over there. Of course it hasnt arrived yet and will take a couple of months. My son has a cycle and a car and they will be shipping those over there. I dont know much about the transportation over there. I do know my nephew took a bus to get into town for some reason and it was very expensive. He did say he would be really glad when his cycle came.

I have just came back from Honolulu to visit my daughter she is living in Pearl city in the same vacinity of Pearl Harbor . Your son would be best to wait till he gets to hawaii as there are so many dealers there to offer military good offers also the car has to go through an inspection to be able to be driven in Oahu when a sticker is recieved to make them legal to drive. Also the big plus he will get their very pretty rainbow registration plate. I hope he enjoys Pearl Harbor it is a wonderful place full of history, also there is a flea market there in the stadium which is fantastic to buy everything Hawaiian.
When he gets to know his way around I recommend he investigates the North shore in his new car everyone thinks if it for huge waves but there is a beach there that is full of sea turtles I went in Sept and although it is really rocky it was my favorite place so much fun swimming with them and learning to snorkel

It cost about $1000.00 to send a car to Hawaii. BUT if he is at Pearl Harbor, there is plenty of transportation (I just moved to Texas from Hawaii) The BUS system and Trollies run every 15mins to every single street on that Island. My Daughter took it to school, I took it to the grocery store and other places...its much cheaper than shipping one.
It is, however, cheaper to buy a car there if he really wants one. Just have him look on Craigs List in Hawaii or once he gets there if he walks down the Ala Wai (In Waikiki) thats where everyone parks cars for sale at decent prices.

Double check this. When my son was transferred across country they shipped the vehicle when he got out of the Navy they wouldn't ship it back, he said they had changed the rules. I don't take this kids word for anything, never have, never will! :) He's the one we tell that we keep him around for entertainment!!
