Better not mess with me...I raised a sailor!

Profile Information

About me:
I live in Miami, Florida and just retired as a Fire Rescue Captain after 25 years of service. My youngest son just graduated for from boot camp. My older son is an Army veteran and my daughter in law still serves in the Army Reserve, deployed for one year to El Paso and left the same week as my younger son with her husband (my son) and my grandchildren in tow, so I only have one chick left in the nest, my daughter. She is an elementary school teacher. I am married to a wonderful husband and also have a step-son and a step-grandchild who live not too far away.
My child's FIRST name only (No Last Names Please!):
George
My son/daughter is:
Enlisted
I was the proudest of my child when:
He chose the path of good and displayed the qualities of a true Navy sailor; honor, courage and commitment during bootcamp.
When my son/daughter first spoke about joining the service I:
Was proud, Encouraged him/her
As a new Navy mom, the most important thing I learned was:
To let go and let God! My son is a man, he is no longer my baby and needs to call his own shots in life.
My son/daughter is currently in the service or retired, and now I believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, This was a maturing experience, This was the best decision he/she could have made

Pensacola A school

George is now in Pensacola for A school. Went to visit him for Labor Day weekend. He's still very encouraged and motivated by his Navy experience. He's still talking about making it a career. He's made new friends, one of which we took along with us everywhere when we visited him in Pensacola. I rented a two bedroom Marriott Residence Inn suite since I was going with my parents and husband, plus it had a kitchen. Made him his favorite Cuban food which I cooked with some items imported from Miami… Continue

On to Pensacola!

Well, George finally finished his training at GL and will be going to Pensacola on August 21st. His A school starts the first week of September. I can't wait to go up there and see him. He is still very motivated and likes what he's doing. He promised me he'll get a cellphone once he gets to Pensacola, so I get to bug him lots.

On to ATT Training at GL

George was finally transferred from THU to his ATT training at GL. He's very happy and tells me he'll try to knock it out in a month so he can move to Pensacola for his AV training. Apparently they are allowed to do it at their own pace if they can finish faster then they are allowed to. He sounds happy and motivated. He is now allowed to have a cellphone but he received over 2500 minutes in phone cards at his farewell party so he wants to use those up and may not get a cellphone for awhile, alt… Continue

Ship 17

George ended up on THU (Ship 17) after he was medically disqualified for his contracted rate (aircrew). He found out that he needed a waiver about 3 weeks into bootcamp. He gave 110% of himself and I encouraged him to do so, even when not knowing what the final outcome would be. He was prepared for the experience and he moved there right after PIR. His time spent on Ship 17 was not a negative experience. He knew why he was there, that it was only temporary, and he was going to make the best of i… Continue

The PIR experience

My husband, daughter and I are currently at GL. My son graduated today. What an incredibly wonderful experience!! Awesome ceremony. My son was supposed to be grad n go but is now going to be on hold pending his next orders. We had booked our tickets to return on Saturday and it cost us an additional $267 each ticket for that change....ouch!! It's worth it to us because now get to spend the entire weekend with him. Here's some of the highlights of our experience: Flew into O'Hare last night and… Continue

Hi Maria, I'm so glad you got to visit with George. Our boys were at boot camp together and PIR but I don't think they know each other. He and Spring's son were in the same division. Thomas was grad n go after PIR so I didn't have much time to get to visit with any of the on-line moms - I had planned to go to the party the night before but got into GL much later than I had anticipated. I read your comments that you were going to go for a visit with your parents and I was in a similar situation - I live with my 86 year old mother and she and our dog were going to make the trip. If it had been just me I probably would have taken the chance too, but travelling from NE Ohio I just wasn't sure what to do - we were going to have to leave here on Thursday and things were still so up in the air and Thomas told me to just cancel - I offered to start out and he could call me when he found out more, but he was under the impression at that time they were evacuating for sure. I was afraid even if they didn't evacuate they'd be on lock down like they were the week-end before. I know how these huricane things go - I lived in Tampa for 35 years - that's where Thomas was born and lived until he was 15. Congratulations on the new job - didn't you just retire? I took early retirement after 32 1/2 years from Hillsborough County government on 12/31/06 and moved back to Ohio. Some days I wish I was going back to work, other days I can't imagine it. We live in a small town so the opportunities are pretty limited too, unless you want to drive some distance and I'm not so keen on that idea in the middle of winter. Anyway thanks for the offer of information - I may be making a trip yet - he is scheduled to graduate Nov. 4th, but he is begging to have his car which I'm not thrilled with that idea - because so much is still unknown such as where his duty station will be and if it's not within driving distance what's the point of having a car for 4 or so weeks, but you know how these kids are (oops I meant young sailors). Thanks again it was good hearing from you.

Hi Maria, I seen that your son was in GL and then now is in Pensacola. My boyfriend graduated from BC on August 22. He is staying in GL for ATT training (about 2 months) and then will be going to Pensacola for A school(about 2 months). Hopefully he will be home for Christmas. Anyways, he wants me to visit him when he can have overnight liberty. He said that is during phase 3. I was wondering if you know what week phase 3 usually begins in. He has been there a week and this week he was going into phase 2 he said. He explained that he has no clue when but hopefully within a few weeks. He also explained that they change weekend duties every weekend. He said that we would plan for the week or two after he was scheduled watch duty, do you know how far in advance they will know what weekend is theirs?

Hi Maria....thanks for the message. He is doing okay. I think he gets impatient at times and wants alot more to happen faster...:)) (that's my son), but he is learning the "hurry up to wait" logo for the Navy. Good for George for getting to "A" school finally! That helps, and it's great you get to go and visit-- it's so great to hear from you. I've missed the chats we all had back then. Good Luck to your son!!

He's doing good. He arrived in Pensacola a week ago and seems to really like it so far, especially compared to bootcamp at GL. We went to his graduation on the 8th. It was awesome! Good luck with your new job and let me know how George likes everything and when he starts classes.

Maria, Hey not much going on here just watching the rain and wind. Our schools are closed today and tomorrow. Jarrett is also looking at things in a positive way, at first he was really upset to get all the way thru school til the last week. But now he is looking forward to moving on and learning more. He is a good kid. Our internet keeps going down. somewhere the wind or some thing is messing up all our cable connections around here. A tornado has touched down in our county. They are talking about it on the news. I have to email Jarrett and let him know we are ok .. Thank you for your kindness and your Prayers and most of all your friendship..
