He is overseas now ...

My seaman apprentice son is now overseas and stationed on a ship. I discovered the ombudsman for the ship sends a monthly newsletter so I print that out for family. I'm so glad his "Uncle" (Sam) is taking care of him, especially in light of the few opportunities in this (what they are finally calling) recession. It is heart wrenching to hand over your child/adult to a large and sometimes non-communicative organization. But no where else does your child earn such honor and respect. "For anythi… Continue

Sorry no pictures or specific references to my son.

I have been counseled by a former Army Ranger to avoid posting pictures or giving my son's name or reference where he is or what he is doing. I don't want my pride in his achievements put him at risk in any way. My friend pointed out that we do not know who may be accessing this website and what information they may be trying to glean. I still want to keep in contact with Navy for Moms because I find the information invaluable. So please forgive my perhaps overcautious nature.

Hey Tami,
Sorry I haven't responded earlier. My son is here at home waiting to start his reserve work. He had his leg checked out by a personal friend that is an orthopedic surgeon. He does have torn medial meniscus and will need surgery. The reserve station that he is working out of says that we have to wait for surgery information until he reports for his first reserve duty in August. Have not pushed him to get a job because we hate to have to ask for time off from a new job when he has to go for surgery and recovery time. He has been getting his military pay twice a month so far. Hate having him hang around the house not being able to work. Been having him help me at school and doing odd jobs here though. (nice) Hope things continue to go well for you and your sailor. Enjoy your visit with him.

Hi Tami - thanks for asking about Derek. Yes, he finished "A" school in April. Then, he came home for two weeks at the end of May. We drove back to Virginia and he is now in Mississippi for more training before heading to Kuwait sometime this summer.
What is your sons job again?
Wow - Japan - I bet he is excited!!! Do you think you will go visit him while he is there?

My "snippi" sailor is going to be headed for Japan after training at GL. It is good to have some news since he has been in holding for quite a few weeks.

Also, what is a "helicopter mom"?

Tami,
I saw your post on the dyslexia blog and wanted to contact you. I am in the same situation you said you were in at one time. My son is in GL now at A school. For how much longer we do not know. He did not do
well in corps. school and we are waiting to hear if
he is coming home or what they will have him do. I have all kinds of questions but do not want to cause him any more problems he may already have. Did your son come right back home from his first A school, or did they just change his training? I am sure we are not getting all the facts from our son.
