Profile

About me:
I have 3 children. A 22 year old daughter who's in college, a 20 year old son who is also in college, and a 19 year old son, Brad, who graduated from Great Lakes on Friday, 5/30/2008. Brad leaves for A school in Pensacola on Thursday, 6/5. I've been married to the same wonderful man (my high school sweetheart) for 26 years. We have a dog and 4 cats.
My child's first name:
Brad
My son/daughter is:
Enlisted
When my son/daughter first spoke about joining the service I:
Encouraged him/her
As a new Navy mom, the most important thing I learned was:
That there are a lot of other great Navy moms who have "been there" and "done that"! As we go through this together, we become wiser (and yet somehow more light-hearted!)
Quote for today:

Thanks to Love Boat moms and Sailor pictures

We (meaning my family and I) leave for Great Lakes tomorrow. My son is graduating on Friday! In some ways these last 8 weeks have flown by, in other ways, they've crawled by. I can't wait to see my son as a real-life sailor! The others moms on this site have very generously provided lots of love, support, and prayers over the last 2 months. I especially want to thank the moms in the "Love Boat" division (the moms of sailors who are graduating this Friday). You all have been so supportive and com… Continue

A banner day - a letter AND a phone call

Today was a GREAT day. It's Thursday, which is letter day at my house. Brad wrote his usual great letter. Things seems to be picking up there (in terms of the pace, I mean.) Brad's had "Ricky crud" (a cold that hangs on...seems very common to get it during the first few days at boot camp) for 4-1/2 weeks. He was really sick on Monday (pink eye, a bit of a fever, etc)...but now he's finally feeling great! Yaay! Last time Brad called I was on my way home from work and missed his call. This time, I… Continue

Good news and not-very-bad news

The good news is: Brad got to call home today (it's only day 3-3 for him, so that's pretty good, I think!)...the not-very-bad news: I missed his call!!! (boo hoo) Luckily his dad and sister were here to take the call. I pumped them for information for about 1/2 hour and he only talked to them for 10 minutes or so. =) They both said he sounded happy, but tired. He's glad to be there and glad to be in the Navy. If he can say that during survival week, I figure he's doing pretty well. He says one o… Continue

The first "real" letter came today

I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, I'm so happy! The first "real" letter came today! HOORAY!!! Brad seems to be doing really well so far. According to him It's not easy, that's for sure, but he seems very upbeat in his letter. I'm pretty sure he hadn't received any of the letters I'd sent yet. The more I think about that, the more it makes sense. I've been writing a letter every day, but didn't have the address until LAST Tuesday. I mailed all of the letters on Tuesday (and one everyday sin… Continue

Happy 19th birthday...wishing you were here

I'm feeling sad today. It's Brad's 19th birthday and he's there with hundreds of "strangers" instead of here at home with cake and ice cream and his parents. :-( I'm missing him like crazy and feeling sad that he won't have any birthday celebration. I probably won't get my first "real" letter for another 2 weeks or so...that's hard too. Ah, here come the "purple puddles" (tears) again. It is very encouraging to read that other moms are getting through it, too. Just read a quick post that a sailo… Continue

Hi, Spring -
Jim should probably be doing pretty well right about now -- it's supposed to be his last day on Ship 17! The Admiral gave him a waiver for his ADHD, his security clearance it going well and they told him that he's leaving for Dam Neck, VA tomorrow!
How is Brad? I will be so glad when I can talk to Jim more often. Do you get to talk to Brad a lot? Does he like Pensacola? Has his school started? Even if he's on hold there, it's got to be better than being on hold on Ship 17! I bet Jim won't complain one bit about being on hold in Virginia. He will be right on the beach there, too. I'm so happy for our boys!!
Hope everything is going great for you and your family. Keep me posted -- Ellen

Wow, interesting trip! Tell Brad hello for me and tell him to hang in there. Soon he'll get classed up and he'll be on his way...I know it can be difficult to access the Net in Europe so if i don't hear from you before the 13th, i'll know why. Have a great time!!

Spring
I hope you had a great time on your vacation. Well deserved, no doubt. George is still at GL where he will stay for the first part of his training then he'll transfer over to Pensacola for A school. He was reclassified to avionics technician which allowed him to stay in aviation so he's happy. Hope Brad is doing well. I just got back from El Paso and brought my two grandkids back to spend a month. That should keep me busy. Hope everything is well with the rest of your family. God bless always

Europe...excellent! I hope you're having a great time. George is getting some basic technical training at GL and says he's scheduled to transfer after two months to Pensacola for A school (AV). Talk to you some more when you get back.

Hey, Spring! It was REALLY great to meet your family, too!
Jim is back in Ship 17 - can you believe it? He's not in the psychiatric separation part, though. He's in the THU(Temporary Holding Unit, I think) where they do odd jobs during the day and have liberty on the weekends. Remember the kids who were telling everybody where to park for PIR? Those kids were on hold, Jim said, so this morning I was trying to picture him out there doing that! They pretty much give them jobs around the base, I believe, until their paperwork comes through. He has a pretty good attitude about it, but I haven't spoken with him, just his dad. I hope he can call this weekend. We had so much fun seeing him. He had us rolling in the aisles telling stories about his RDC!
Did y'all have fun with Brad? Is he on his way to Pensacola? Fill me in!
Your other son and daughter and husband were so nice - I'm glad we got to meet! Ellen
