Profile Information

About me:
I am slowly becoming a more seasoned Navy Mom. My son joined the Navy Dec 21st. He graduated boot camp on 4/4/08 and just completed his IT training at A-school in Pensacola in July. He is now stationed in Japan. 15 hours is a huge time difference when you are trying to stay in touch, but we are doing okay. We live in the Houston, TX area, where we moved in 2006 after living our whole lives in Modesto, CA. I work at a junior college in our area in the business office.
My child's FIRST name only (No Last Names Please!):
Trevor
My son/daughter is:
Enlisted
I was the proudest of my child when:
I've been proud of Trevor on many occassions. The most proud moments were his Eagle Scout, High School Graduation, Pass In Review from Navy Boot Camp, A-school graduation, anytime he wears his uniform! Most recently when he was promoted to Petty Officer
When my son/daughter first spoke about joining the service I:
Was concerned or afraid, Needed to learn more about it, Was proud, Encouraged him/her
As a new Navy mom, the most important thing I learned was:
I'm still learning. I'm trying hard to be supportive of his decision and not tell him how worried I am for him. I do think he made a good choice for himself, although that doesn't take my concern away.
My son/daughter is currently in the service or retired, and now I believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, This was a maturing experience, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

News from Japan 11/22/08

It’s been a few weeks since I have updated all of you on Trevor, so thought it was time to do so again as there have been some recent developments. First of all, I think when I wrote the last update I told you that he had broken his scaphoid bone in his hand. He was in a cast that went from just under his arm-pit down to his knuckles with his thumb in a up position. Since then he has been seen again to have a smaller cast put on (this one goes just below his elbow) and have x-rays taken. The do… Continue

Update from Japan 10/19/08

It’s been awhile since I’ve added an update on Trevor so I thought it was about time. We talk to Trevor by phone about once a week as with the time difference, work schedules and such it is hard to converse more often than that. In addition he isn’t really able to discuss his work with us so much of our conversations are on a more personal level. What we do know is that he is enjoying his time in Japan. For the most part he finds his work exciting and interesting. He appreciates the opportunity… Continue

First Impressions of Japan by an young sailor... 8/5/08

Our son started his own blog at my encouragment. Here's what he wrote for his first blog from Japan: I have finally arrived in Japan. Let me first say this is the most amazing place I've ever been to in my entire life. The rolling countrysides are teaming with an unimaginable amount of life. Even in the more downtown parts of Japan; you'll see how green this place is. The people, despite some language barriers are extremely nice. Culturally, the Japanese view military members extremely highly;… Continue

Winging His Way... 8/1/08

So marks another milestone in our navy experience. We said good-bye today after 21 days with our son. He's on his way to Japan (his first duty station). He is excited at the adventures that await him and anxious to put to use his skills and training. We had a nice visit with him the last few weeks. While selfishly I would have kept him here forever, life moves forward and so must we. Our trip to the airport this morning was interesting, since he has never traveled internationally before, and th… Continue

7/11/08 A-School Grad - Homecoming

Well folks, Trevor graduated A-school yesterday morning! He is an ITSN now and very proud of his accomplishments, as he should be. They sent him home for a 21-day leave before he has to report to Japan. Last night he flew in at 10:15 p.m. last night. We were fortunate enough to find a small waiting area at the end of the hall where they emerge (as opposed to waiting in baggage claim). We sat camped out ready for him to round the corner. He fortunately called ahead to say the were on the ground,… Continue

Hello,
My son Derek is a Seabee stationed in Gulfport, Mississippi. He has been in Gulfport since his PIR in January. He is doing well. I think the hardest thing for my Modesto boy was getting used to the humidity and weather of Mississippi.

Derek starts field exercises (FEX) next weekend. From what I understand FEX is 21 days of war games. He is excited. Mom is bummed - 21 days of no phone contact or texting .

Derek would so love to be with Trevor in Japan. He used to joke that he was Japanese in another life. His unit is scheduled to deploy in September. He said he will be going to Guam or Japan. We are keeping our fingers crossed for Japan.

I can't find my list, but here are some that I have collected :P

1)Write a letter on toilet paper - tell him that you want to "crack" him up- this is boy humor (use a good pen - it rips easily)
2)Print out family pictures on regular paper, and write a story to match the pictures. My story was about Captain Stinkfinger.
3)Go online and print out jokes - especially ones about the Navy or military.
4) Clip articles from the local paper, or comic strips
5) All those e-mail jokes you get a work - send them
6) Send him a "Congratulations on your new home" card.
7) Humorous cards. This can be $$$$ but I have found some funny cards
8) Origami if you know how to do it. I can make paper airplanes.
9) Little books - I found a book about 2inches X 2 inches. Cody had to open it in front of his DIV and read two pages. The title of the book was The History of Farts. It was a gas LOL.
10) off season cards..ie Easter in December
11) letter from the pets perspective

So, do ya'll have any suggestions on the best one to buy? We have 3 15 - 20 years old TV's. Obviously we don't have digital. Yes, One still has rabbit ears in my room, but I only use it for morning news when I wake up. PS, my hubby got a job in Beaumont, so we're looking for him a place to stay. Also, mom/dad and brother/wife's electricity in Conroe didn't get turned on till way after mine. How long was yours out? We lost so much, but hey, we're fine.
