RE: A School

Tristan is in San Antonio Texas at the Airforce Base for A School. It sounds like everything is going well. He is waiting to see what he will do as an MA - whether shore patrol, base, or what.......and where he may go. He sounds so much more grown up than before he went into boot camp. I think overall this has been a good experience for him. He has made friends and learned a lot about what he can really do when he wants to do it. It is great to see such a positive change in him. And I myself hav… Continue

He did it

We are back from Illinois. We got in last night. The graduation really was an awesome thing to see. There were a total of 690 Sailors graduated on Friday the 13th. They all looked so nice in their uniforms. I am proud of all of them. Tristan was really excited to see us and we were able to spend Friday afternoon Liberty with him and his Saturday liberty with him. We did try out Flannigans, excellent food and service. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Gurnee and I would definitely recommend it to a… Continue

But a little nervous after Kathy's news about Jonathan........so far so good..........Tristan has never had any health problems........but it sounds like Jonathan was pretty healthy too.......our prayers are with you Kathy and Jonathan. Tristan said he was able to put in an order for cd of graduation and graduation pictures.........they don't sound cheap, but I think they will be well worth the price...this is a once in a lifeti… Continue

Our son is graduating boot camp on June 13.......we are all set to go - except what should my husband and I wear to the graduation.....dress and suit - or is it a little more casual like just dress slacks and such....any advice would be nice - we don't want to be either over or under dressed for the occasion...we are so proud

He called

My son called last Wednesday, he sounded well. He said he had passed his swim test and has taken his physical testing - he ran the 1.5 miles faster than required. He said the food is good and boot camp isn't as bad as he expected. He said it is hard, but he is glad he decided to join the Navy, he said he feels like it was the right decision for him. I got his graduation packet in the mail yesterday. I am really looking forward to seeing him graduate boot camp. I have been checking out plane tick… Continue

Not sure I know what is going on in the MA world but the sailor that got orders to Italy, got orders to Kuwait the day before and then they changed them. I know of another MA that has gotten three sets of orders so far with very different destinations. So until they are in their hand and maybe even - on a plane, it seems to be impossible to predict!

Hi Colleen! Just a quick note - but a very important one. Jonathan is a Sailor!!!! He finished BS Wed and was "capped". He will not attend PIR - so we will not experience that unfortunately. But, bottom line, he has healed, and been released for duty. He is in the THU waiting on his orders. He will go to Goose Creek, SC where the Nuke A school is for about a year or more. I can't tell you how relieved I am. Tomorrow I am having surgery (aortic valve replacement), and this was the boast I needed to take my mind off that for a while anyway!!!! Many thanks for your encouragement and prayers. Lets keep each other updated!! kathy

Hi Kathy,
I am happy to hear that the surgery went well. Did they change his Division? Hopefully he will get to go through PIR. Tristan's was awesome indeed. They stand there for the whole thing without moving once they march in. From what some of Tristan's friends said they had 35 pass out during the PIR, to be perfectly honest I did not see any of them go down myself. I did meet Matt's mom - he and Tristan were bunk mates and friends - but we had to wait for Tristan to move over to ship 17 accross the street, so we really didn't spend much time with them. Tristan ordered a CD of the ceremony, it should arrive in a few weeks. It really is an awesome sight to see. I will bring in my camera tomorrow to work and download some of the pictures I took - I didn't get a whole bunch as there were so many people there trying to get pics.....There is also a yearbook basically they can purchase. Tristan said he ordered it with the package. I feel so bad that Jonathan was not able to go through the PIR on Friday. I know he worked so hard to get to where he is and I know it hasn't been easy. Does he know where he will go to A School yet? Tristan will be going to San Antonio Texas.

Hi Colleen! Yes, I spoke to him on Wed just before we were to fly up. He had the surgery and was healing. All he has to complete is BS and he will graduate, probably 1-2 week delay. I don't think he will go throught PIR. But I guess there is always A school graduation! I hope Tristan's PIR was awesome!! Did you get to meet some other N4M's? I was so disappointed that things didn't work out - but as one friend shared with me; God must have had a different path in mind for Jonathan and for us. Tell me about your weekend. If you can, share pictures, etc. I almost tried to find out how to buy the CD of the ceremony!!!! That would be bittersweet I suppose. Thank you so much for caring! I'll keep you posted! kathy

Colleen, I have a little bit of info. Jonathan was able to call Sat and said a Lt that he has spoken with had told him that he would probably not be d/c but might be re-assigned to Ship 17. HOWEVER, he was supposed to have seen a surgeon today and would call. I havn't heard a word, sooo I am "hoping" that no news is good news. He sounded so much better Saturday. Please continue to pray and keep him in your thoughts. I feel that I've gotten to know so many wonderful moms and I do hope that i get to meet you all soon!!!!!

Colleen, Jonathan called with some very disturbing news. He was told today that he would have to be medically discharged!! He went to medical and was told that he had a pilonidal cyst. He has to go back to see the navy surgeon on Monday. He was completely devastated. I have found out more info (thanks to this wonderful site and to Karen Gallagher) that this does not warrant a D/C. He said that he had passed everything except for a couple of tests next week and of course battlestations. I may not be in Chicago next Friday after all. I can't believe that this is happening the last week of BC - and something that is not his fault. Please keep him in your prayers. I'll certainly keep you posted. Kathy

Hi Colleen! Great news - what a relief for both you and Tristan. I rec'd a letter Thursday from Jonathan. He said that the PF test was today, and Battle Stations were Wednesday of next week. They were 40 hrs long (?) and he would go to bed Thurs and get up Friday to get ready for grad. I had read that some sailors were fainting during the ceremony - I can understand why now!!! They are exhausted. I'm hoping to get a call today also. I'm so excited for you, now take a deep breath!!!! Kathy
P.S. Where and What is Tristan doing for A School?
